Just as I say that, the South Africa fly-half kicks out on the full, giving Scotland the chance to march up the pitch. However, a clumsy fumble immediately takes the pressure off as the hosts get the put in at a scrum.

Handre Pollard nails the penalty with ease. This young man is enjoying an excellent debut.

  3. Postpublished at 17:03 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

South Africa keep the ball moving one way, then the next, and it's no surprise when a penalty is signalled a few steps away from the Scottish 10 metre line.

  4. Postpublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

South Africa put together several passing phases to push Scotland back and Tommy Seymour eventually bundles the ball out to concede a line-out and give his team-mates time to catch a breather.

Scotland fly-half Tom Heathcote on BBC Radio Scotland

"If we get the first score of the second half, then it's a one score game again. Stuart Hogg has looked dangerous for us and we need to get him involved more."

  9. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Scotland were showing a few signs of life at the end of a first-half that was pretty much all one-way traffic. South Africa started like a runaway train and ran in three tries in the opening 20 minutes, with the visitors really struggling to cope.

  10. Postpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Scotland gain more ground but are penalised for crossing just as things were starting to look interesting. South Africa kick the penalty deep but Tommy Seymour makes an another impressive burst with ball in hand. He's the only one capable of breaking tackles at the moment.

  11. Postpublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Scotland winger Tommy Seymour jinks away from a couple of challenges and Henry Pyrgos is on his shoulder to venture into the South Africa half but the visitors are soon repelled and find themselves back deep in their own half.

  12. PENALTYpublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

It's another excellent kick from long-range as Duncan Weir makes it two-from-two for the afternoon.

  13. Postpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Scotland come again, with scrum-half Henry Pyrgos darting through a gap and Duncan Weir has a chance with a second penalty.

  14. Postpublished at 16:39 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Scotland rumble forward from a line-out, making decent ground, but all of that good work counts for nothing as Peter Horne sends a terrible pass high into the Port Elizabeth sky and nowhere near a team-mate.

  15. Postpublished at 16:36 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Another South Africa line-out and more trouble for the visitors. However, the Scots hang tough this time, with Chris Fusaro making an excellent try-saving tackle on replacement scrum-half Francois Hougaard.

  16. Postpublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Nic de Luca snaffles a chip-kick from Handre Pollard and scampers away but the Scotland centre is halted as the referee whistles for offside.

  17. Postpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Scotland's time near the opposition posts is brief as yet another penalty goes the way of South Africa.

  18. Postpublished at 16:33 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

A spot of pushing and shoving near the halfway line as a Henry Pyrgos kick is blocked by an offside opponent, giving Duncan Weir the chance to kick Scotland up the park.

  19. Postpublished at 16:30 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

Better defence from Scotland but the green shirts keep coming and Handre Pollard goes close to sending Cornal Hendricks free but the pass was forward.

  20. OUCH!published at 16:26 British Summer Time 28 June 2014

South Africa plunder the ball inside their own 22 and Willie le Roux spots a gap, chipping forward, only to be clattered by a combination of Adam Ashe and Ross Ford. The home full-back gets a nasty bump on the head from the Scottish hooker and needs to leave the field with blood gushing from a cut above his eye. The Scottish hooker is perhaps fortunate to avoid a yellow card.
