So, Scotland will have to wait a little longer to book their spot in the World Cup quarter-finals. It could be an anxious old final weekend of the group stages.

Speaking of anxious, now seems a good time to turn our attentions towards some minor fixture happening down the road at Twickenham this evening.

Scotland head coach Vern Cotter: "We were better in the second half, the first half we did not have a lot of possession and at times we were going backwards because they put in such a powerful performance. But congratulations to South Africa.

"Now we have got seven days to prepare for the match against Samoa. We haven't had seven days of preparation between games up to now, so we have got time to iron a few things out.

"We will be able to spend a bit of time preparing and training, and hopefully no injuries. We're looking forward to it."

Right then, that Pool B table. It definitely looks a lot nicer for South Africa's fans now than it did at the start of the match.

But it is not the result Japan were hoping for. They will need to beat USA in their final group game, and then hope either South Africa or Scotland fail to beat USA or Samoa respectively.

Any Scotland win versus Samoa in Newcastle next Saturday will take them into the quarter-finals.

Calculators are at the ready once more, so we'll have a Pool B as-it-stands table with you in just a few moments. Whatever the maths, however, I think it's safe to say that Scotland will need to beat Samoa in their final group game to squeeze into the last eight.

The Scots did threaten a revival in that second half, with Tommy Seymour's try keeping the Newcastle crowd interested, but Handre Pollard's trusty boot and Bryan Habana's late touchdown put an end to that.

And that will be that. South Africa the better side across the piece, and they leapfrog Scotland back to the top of Pool B.

The game continues to peter out as South Africa have the put-in at a scrum now, deep inside their own half.

Just a handful of seconds remain.

Fraser Brown is back on for Ross Ford, who looks to be carrying an injury. Scotland could do without that.

We're into the final three minutes at St James' Park, the crowd quiet, subdued, the Springboks delighted with their day's work.

A South Africa knock-on means we'll have a scrum on halfway, Sam Hidalgo-Clyne the man who'll insert.

The two packs hold firm initially, but then collapse to prompt a reset.

And, after Schalk Burger breaks the line to leave Scottish defenders scampering, Bryan Habana is left with a relatively simple sliding finish in the corner.

Handre Pollard misses the posts, but it matters not now. The Springboks have done their job.

South Africa are up to the five-metre line, they sense blood, knowing they can finish this right here, right now...

  14. South Africa 29-16 Scotlandpublished at 71 mins

It's patient stuff from Scotland, switching the ball from side to side in search of an opening, but the Springboks turn it over and now come forward themselves.

Into the final eight minutes - is this one done and dusted?

Another Scotland change to tell you about as captain Greig Laidlaw is replaced by the fresh-faced Sam Hidalgo-Clyne.

The line-out is good, too, and the Scots are approaching the 22...

Scotland's Tim Swinson is tackled by JP PietersenImage source, Reuters

JP Pietersen's tackle is a clumsy one, I think it's fair to say, almost taking Tim Swinson over the horizontal - but referee Nigel Owens decides it's nothing more than clumsy, so it's a penalty and that'll be your lot.

This graphic shows the scrums that South Africa have won. But where are the ones Scotland have won, I hear you ask? Well there aren't any.

Meanwhile, the television match official is taking a look at JP Pietersen's tackle on replacement Tim Swinson...

And Handre Pollard is as reliable as ever from the tee, so their lead is 13 points.

Twelve minutes remain, where do we go from here?

  19. South Africa 26-16 Scotlandpublished at 66 mins

Back on the pitch, the Springboks are coming forward again, up to Scotland's 22.

They have an advantage too, so Fourie du Preez tries to send JP Pietersen over in the corner - but he's beaten in the air by Tim Visser so we'll come back for the original infringement.
