Handre Pollard, with 21 points to his name at this year's tournament, makes it 24 from around 25 metres out, slightly to the left of the posts.

A business-like opening quarter from the men in white.

  3. South Africa 7-0 Scotlandpublished at 17 mins

South Africa, who've won 27 out of 27 line-outs already at this World Cup, secure the ball and get the rolling maul working. It rolls on, and on, and on... from halfway to Scotland's 22!

Eventually it's dragged down illegally, so South Africa have a penalty and Handre Pollard will have a pop at the posts.

  5. South Africa 7-0 Scotlandpublished at 15 mins

South Africa finally got over the line after a sustained spell of possession. The atmosphere is like a home Scotland match, but the almost-hosts have only had 27% of the ball so far.

The ball is kicked long by the Springboks and full-back Stuart Hogg calls the mark. A good time to settle things down a wee bit.

Try - Burger, con Pollardpublished at 13 mins

After much consultation, eventually it's decided that the ball is indeed grounded among a pile of bodies and the try will count.

It initially looks as though Bismarck du Plessis' hand was on the ball, but the try is instead awarded to Schalk Burger.

Handre Pollard's conversion is good, South Africa lead by seven.

South Africa have an advantage, but still they knock on the Scottish door. They're a metre out... they're over! But is it down?

We head to the television match official...

  8. South Africa 0-0 Scotlandpublished at 11 mins

In the aftermath it's Scotland's turn to suffer the wrath of referee Nigel Owens, Richie Gray guilty of failing to release on the floor.

The Springboks stream forward again, into the 22... Jannie du Plessis making yards now, up to the five-metre line...

  9. South Africa 0-0 Scotlandpublished at 8 mins

Another Fraser Brown throw, another South African steal. An ominous start for Scotland at the set-piece.

Now, we'll scrum down. There's a whole lot of family love across the two packs today, with the Gray brothers and Du Plessis brothers set to do battle.

But long-locked lock Lood de Jager infringes at the breakdown, coming off his feet in the heat of the battle, and Scotland head to touch on halfway.

And the Springboks, so lethal at the line-out, steal it... but before you know it, it's back in Scottish hands once more.

Another infringement allows them to head to touch again too - this time deep in Springbok territory.

Scotland's line-out is a good one too, but Stuart Hogg's arrowing pass out wide is ugly and forward and the Springboks will insert at the scrum.

Their pack, just 4kg heavier than the Scots', get the job done. South Africa are into the 22...

  13. South Africa 0-0 Scotlandpublished at 3 mins

The Springboks have the ball back in hand and are into Scotland's half, working through the phases.

Fourie du Preez, captaining South Africa for the first time today, pulls the strings - before Handre Pollard's hanging kick alludes Bryan Habana and drifts out of play.

  14. Kick-offpublished at 1 min

    South Africa 0-0 Scotland

Welsh referee Nigel Owens is the man in the middle today and his whistle prompts South Africa fly-half Handre Pollard to boot long and get us under way.

Scotland gather and Duncan Weir clears. We're up and running in Newcastle.

Flower of Scotland is sounding just majestic, as it always does.

I mentioned earlier than only 60 miles separate St James' Park from the Scottish Border - and the Scots have indeed turned this into a bit of a home match.

    Kick off is moments away.

All the pressure, then, is on South Africa...

Adam Shaw: Is it just me that thinks South Africa have more pressure on them today? If they don't win, good chance they're out.

The Dugout: This group is still wide open. Would love to see Japan get through the group, this is a huge game.

Javel Bleach: Brilliant Japan! Connotations for South Africa are now huge! All in Scotland's hands!

South Africa v Scotland (16:45 BST)

Right then, St James' Park is certainly in fine voice today. The two teams are out, both tracksuited and booted ready for the anthems.

Scotland will be in their familiar blue this afternoon, South Africa in a rather less familiar white and green kit.

  18. How they standpublished at 16:40

South Africa v Scotland (16:45 BST)

So we've had our calculators out, and we can tell you that Japan's 26-5 win over Samoa has taken them above South Africa into second position.

If the Springboks lose and fail to take a bonus point against Scotland then they will be eliminated if Japan beat United States on Sunday, 11 October.

If two nations finish the pool phase on the same amount of points then the head-to-head result is the deciding criteria.
