    Ireland 35-20 Scotland

Fight! Fight! Fight! Schoolyard stuff from both sets of players as they scuffle over something of nothing. Not once but twice. Perhaps someone has been whispering about someone else behind their backs.

Johnny Sexton is the one sent to stand outside the headmaster's office for the rest of match. The Ireland fly-half is punished for lifting the legs in the ruck.

    Ireland 35-20 Scotland

Scotland aren't throwing in the towel just yet. The visitors create some space on the left flank, but their rhythm is rudely interrupted when Ireland wing Andrew Trimble blocks the run of John Barclay. Stuart Hogg is also illegally hauled back for good measure.

    Scotland boot into the corner.

    Ireland 35-20 Scotland

Ireland charge forward on the offensive, green shirts swarming towards the Scotland line. Jared Payne jinks through a couple of would-be Scottish tacklers, flinging the ball out wide to wing Andrew Trimble. Forward pass. Scotland scrum.

    Toner try, Sexton con

Pooooof. That's Scotland's chances of winning disappear like a puff of smoke. The visitors got torn apart when down to 14 in the first half, and concede within seconds of Alex Dunbar's goodbye.

Lanky Ireland lock Devin Toner crashes over under the posts, both players engage in a bit of biff, Johnny Sexton clips over the kick.

    Game over.

  5. Sin-bin - Ireland 28-20 Scotlandpublished at 67 mins

    Alex Dunbar

Stupid. Scotland centre Alex Dunbar dives into the ruck - fine. Picking up Johnny Sexton and tossing him over the shoulder like a Highlands caber - not so fine.

That incurs the wrath of referee Pascal Gauzere and the TMO. Only one outcome...yellow card. Scotland coach Vern Cotter looks livid.

    Ireland 28-20 Scotland

Where's the Scottish tidal wave that we expected? It's not materialised. The Irish waters are all calm as the home pack look to take the sting out the final 15 minutes.

"What a cracking match this is, it just never stops. When we think Scotland are done and dusted they come straight back into it again."

    Ireland 28-20 Scotland

"Ire-land! Ireeeee-land!" The Aviva finds it collective voice for the first time in a while, trying to push their side towards the Scotland try-line. Johnny Sexton and Stuart Hogg go all Chuckle Brothers on us, to me, to you, exchanging kicks as the game goes aerial.

  9. Postpublished at 58 mins

    Ireland 28-20 Scotland

How costly does that John Barclay sin-binning now look? Scotland spluttered 12 points in their man's absence in the middle part of the first half.

Richie Gray try, Gregor Laidlaw con

Game on! Scotland take full advantage of that gimme, second row Richie Gray lumbering through a gap left by an eager Jared Payne.

Gregor Laidlaw hardly misses a kick from anywhere, let alone from in front of the posts. He doesn't. Scotland back within a try and a penalty...

  11. Postpublished at 55 mins

    Ireland 28-13 Scotland

Great press defence by Ireland, Jared Payne flying out of the traps quicker than a greyhound to close down the ball. But Scotland earn a reprieve, Tommy O'Donnell penalised for being off his feet. Gregor Laidlaw goes for touch and field position. Here comes the Scottish onslaught....

"That is the second try Ireland have scored from similar positions. It was the right tactic from Ireland," says Denis Hickie.

  14. try

Conor Murray try, Johnny Sexton con

Safety first from Duncan Weir as he casually strolls into touch to stop that Ireland try. But it gives the home side the chance to pummel the Scottish line, big Dev Toner using his considerable size to cause bother.

All hands to the pump in the away defence, but the brawn is outfoxed by the brains of Conor Murray. The Ireland scrum-half nips in to drag the ball out and whizz over the line from close range.

  15. Postpublished at 46 mins

    Ireland 21-13 Scotland

Ireland break out quickly, cutting loose after Jamie Heaslip batters a hole in the middle of the Scottish line. The home side chuck the ball out right, Robbie Henshaw and Jared Payne combining. It's got to be a try! Nope, Scotland fly-half Duncan Weir nips in to save the day.

  16. Postpublished at 42 mins

    Ireland 21-13 Scotland

Scotland on the front foot in the opening stages of the restart, full-back Stuart Hogg breaking on the outside before offloading inside. The visitors punch through the middle, but wing Tommy Seymour spills after drifting in from the flank.

  17. Kick-offpublished at 18:04 Greenwich Mean Time 19 March 2016

    Ireland 21-13 Scotland

Scotland barge down the Aviva tunnel first, Vern Cotter's words of wisdom ringing in their ears. The word 'discipline' probably featured heavily.

Ireland trudge down seconds later. Their man Johnny Sexton gets us rolling again.

"Ireland have bludgeoned Scotland back and Scotland have lived a little on scraps. Ireland have dominated really throughout."

  19. Half-timepublished at 17:55

    Ireland 21-13 Scotland

Ireland dominated, Scotland had a brief rally, referee Pascal Gauzere tooted his whistle a lot, then Ireland totally dominated.

That's pretty much the first half in a nutshell.
