Shorn of their England contingent for the Six Nations, Saracens endured a mixed set of results in February.

A late penalty from Charlie Hodgson gave Sarries a 14-11 win at Exeter in round 11 but a week later the champions conceded eight tries as they were beaten 64-23 by Wasps at Allianz Park.

Mark McCall's side recovered from that defeat to dispatch Gloucester 25-12 before ending the month with a 36-36 draw at Sale, with Danny Cipriani missing a late conversion which would have given the Sharks victory.

After losing to Saracens, Exeter then fell to a 23-17 defeat at Sale before recording victories over London Irish and Bath.

Exeter stand on the brink of winning the Premiership title, having only won promotion to the top flight in 2010.

A fourth-tier club 20 years ago, victory today would cap a remarkable rise for the club from Devon.

One could even draw parallels with Leicester City FC who won the Premier League this season despite being written off by pundits and fans as rank outsiders.

BBC Sport's Brent Pilnick has been looking at the similarities between Exeter and the Foxes.

Exeter's top-four bid was dealt a blow on New Year's Day when they suffered an 8-3 defeat at Northampton.

Rob Baxter's side bounced back to record victories over Gloucester and Worcester before the month was out.

Saracens suffered their first defeat of the season when they lost 29-23 to London rivals Harlequins, ending their 15-match winning run.

That reverse was sandwiched in between victories over Leicester and Bath at Allianz Park.

    Stuart Lancaster
Ex-England coach on BBC Radio 5 live

"The Premiership final is something I always used to look forward to as England coach.

It was a great occasion where you weren’t involved in the preparations for the game or the consequences of it so it was one you could enjoy.

"Today it is two great teams with slightly contrasting styles and I’m really looking forward to it.

"It will be a tight game but I think both sides will open up."

There were just two rounds of action in December, with Exeter securing impressive back-to-back victories; first 41-27 at the Ricoh against Wasps then 33-17 at home to Sale just after Christmas.

Sarries, too, were in good form, winning at Newcastle and Wasps.

Elsewhere Harlequins and Gloucester played out a thrilling 39-39 draw in front of over 70,000 at Twickenham on 27 December.

Saracens recorded consecutive wins in November, first a narrow 12-6 triumph at Northampton and then a more comfortable 48-18 victory over Worcester Warriors in the Twickenham double header.

Exeter, meanwhile, enjoyed a 41-3 victory at Newcastle before following that up with a 19-6 triumph at home to Leicester.

The Chiefs closed out the month with a narrow 26-25 victory against Harlequins at Sandy Park when Quins' Tim Swiel sent a last-gasp penalty attempt wide of the posts.

Exeter Chiefs chairman Tony Rowe has overseen the club's transformation from an amateur operation into one of the leading clubs in Europe.

Having reached the biggest game in domestic rugby, Rowe has now sounded a warning about rising salaries in the game.

A substantial rise in television revenue aligned with changes in the salary cap has seen players paid in excess of £500,000 per year.

"There is a concern amongst the Premiership chairmen that we do need to try to control player salaries," Rowe told BBC Radio 5 live.

"Every time we lift the salary cap, the wages go up and up and up. We need to try to strike a balance."

If Exeter beat Saracens to lift the title, Rowe will probably think every penny invested in the club has been money well spent.

The 2015-16 Premiership season started with a shock on the opening night, when Worcester Warriors upset 2014 champions Northampton Saints 13-12 at Sixways.

Sarries began their title defence with a 41-3 win at home to Sale in the first round, and followed that up with victories over Gloucester and London Irish before the month was out.

Exeter narrowly lost their opening fixture 19-17 at Bath but recorded their first victory when they comfortably beat Irish 38-11 at Sandy Park.

Saracens fly-half Owen Farrell is set to become the highest individual points scorer in Premiership finals history this afternoon.

The England international currently sits level on 44 points with former Wasps back Mark Van Gisbergen.

Farrell racked up 17 points as Sarries won the title in 2011, a further nine in the defeat by Northampton two years later and 18 more as Saracens beat Bath last season.

A score of any sort today would put the 24-year-old ahead of van Gisbergen today.

Exeter are looking to win their maiden Premiership title this afternoon.

Having finished second in the table, their visit to Twickenham represents the culmination of their 145-year history.

Having won promotion to the top flight for the first time in 2010 the club has gradually improved, winning the 2014 LV= Cup and making the Champions Cup quarter-finals this year.

The Chiefs have lost on their four previous visits to the national stadium as a lower-league side, twice in the Challenge Shield and twice in the National Trophy.

  16. Sarries eye doublepublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 28 May 2016

    Saracens v Exeter (15:00 BST)

Not only are Saracens aiming to retain their Premiership trophy, they are aiming to add the domestic title to their European Champions Cup triumph.

Sarries became champions of Europe for the first time when they beat French Top 14 side Racing 92 21-9 two weeks ago.

Mark McCall's side are aiming to be the third English side to achieve the feat, emulating Leicester in 2001 and Wasps in 2004.

Flanker Will Fraser says the side are remaining relaxed through.

"You can't hide away from the fact it would be an incredible thing to achieve," he told BBC London.

"There has been no talk of the double in team meetings.

"It has been more about the individual games; the European Cup final, the play-off and now the final. It is purely about taking this game and putting in a good performance."
