Ireland, Wales and Scotland's years are over, as they all finished with victories.

Plenty of encouragement for all the home nations and what a result for Ireland who beat Australia to clinch victories over the 'big three' southern hemisphere teams in the same year for the first time.

England, who beat Argentina, round their year off next week, as they welcome Australia to Twickenham.

What a game that could be.

To put this win in context, New Zealand absolutely thrashed South Africa, England put 50 points on them and Wales 27.

That gives you a measure of Wales' level and how poor South Africa are,

Within minutes of South Africa's defeat, their eighth defeat in the calendar year, the president of SA Rugby announced a review into the season and an overhaul of South African rugby.

"It has been a profoundly disappointing season in terms of results and we are acutely aware that we have failed to live up to the Springboks’ proud heritage,” said Mark Alexander.

The home nations have completed a clean sweep today with England beating Argentina, Scotland thrashing Georgia, Wales comfortable winners against South Africa and Ireland's historic win over Australia.

Elsewhere Italy let the rest of the northern hemisphere down with a 17-19 defeat by Tonga.

Ireland's man of the match Josh van der Flier told Sky Sports: "Australia are a brilliant team. We got kncoked a couple of times in defence. They're a class team and we had to grind hard.

It's always nice to get man of the match but you could have given it to any of the lads. We really stood up in defence.

Australia captain Stephen Moore: "We didn't have enough chances in first half. We worked our way back in and Ireland kept coming back. They deserved to win.

"We knew this was a five week tour and now we've got to go again against England."

Wales coach Rob Howley: "I think we were quite comfortable for 80 minutes.

"For five weeks the players have given everything, they have been training well and it is nice to transfer that into the final game. 

"I am delighted for the players. Their effort and attitude has been brilliant and has paid off with a win today."

Wales man of the match Justin Tipuric: "It was important to have a good win. We have been training hard for five weeks and it was nice to put in a performance like that.

"I think any South Africa team are good team. They fought until the end and I thought they were going to give us a scare at the end but the boys dug in."

South African captain Adriaan Strauss: "It is embarrassing for us, we let down people in South Africa, we let down ex-Springbok players.

"I am still very hopeful for the future, but it will take time with a lot of hard decisions and hard work ahead."

Australia are building up from the back. Ireland are desperately trying to mow them down. 

Will Genia kicks wildly high in the midfield and Ireland gather.

Wales will be happy with the result and happy with three wins from four.

This performance was a lot better. Wales are trying to evolve and play this expansive game but there is a lot to do before the Six Nations.

The noise in the Aviva Stadium is deafening. 

We have a scrum deep inside the Ireland half. It could be decisive. The screams from the fans might be the extra force Ireland need.

Australia are penalised for not rolling away and Conor Murray clears out.
