So there you have it - the challengers come to the home of the champions having beaten all before them, but find this challenge too much.

Saracens are back where they feel they'll belong, top of the Premiership, but Wasps are on their coattails, just two points behind them.

Just the small matter of the first round of European Champions Cup games next week.

This season just keeps on giving.

Reigning champions Saracens have moved to the top of the Premiership table after ending Wasps' 100% start to the season.

Sarries led 13-8 at the break, and although penalties from Wasps fly-half Jimmy Gopperth pulled the score back, Jamie George went over twice either side of Josh Bassett's yellow card to give the hosts a bonus point win.

  3. "We've come up second best"published at 17:10 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

    FT: Saracens 30-14 Wasps

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young told BT Sport:

"The best team won - as simple as that.

"We didn't really get any penetration with the ball - we knew what was coming with their legendeary defence.

"We weren't allowed to play the game we would've liked, but we knew what was coming and we've got to learn from it.

"We've had a really good start but we've come up second best against the double champions."

Billy Vunipola told BT Sport: "We were good today in parts, but we still need to work on our discipline.

"There's a lot more pressure (on us), but if you want to be world class you have to take that front on."

It was a great day for us and it was the cherry on the cake to get the bonus point. When you come up against a side which is unbeaten in the Premiership, there is always going to be more edge in it. The staff put in so much analysis into each game and we knew what the game-plan was. It was just about carrying that out.

    Saracens 30-14 Wasps

A game that was up for grabs for so much of the 80 minutes has finished in a fairly comfortable margin of victory for Saracens.

Two Jamie George tries created the gap in the score, but the hosts really turned the screw as the second half wore on and Wasps couldn't quite go toe to toe with them.

We have new Premiership leaders folks!

Saracens have been powerful, measured and clinical here, all words which can be used to describe Maro Itoje.

He has been imperious in this second half.

The only time you really believed in Wasps was in the first 10 minutes of the second half, and the hosts quickly changed that.

  8. try

Try (George, con Spencer)published at 74 mins

    Saracens are predators, aren't they?

Any sign of weakness, any possible opportunity to pounce and they're on hand to do exactly that to claim a bonus point try.

A matter of seconds after Wasps have Josh Bassett sin-binned, Jamie George goes over for his second try of the game after a driving maul.

The extras are added by Ben Spencer and the visitors' winning record is all but gone.

It's all beginning to unravel for leaders Wasps.

Josh Bassett is pulled up for a high tackle, adding to his deliberate knock-on earlier this half, and he's showed the yellow card.

Sarries have home advantage, a nine point lead and an extra man now, with less than seven minutes to go.

Saracens certainly aren't ready for a changing of the guard in English rugby.

Having seen their lead shrink moments before, Sarries do what perennial winners do and recover instantly, replacement Jamie George diving over from close range to score.

Alex Lozowski converts - is there any way back for Wasps?

The sublime followed by the ridiculous just seconds later.

Wasps are in the ascendancy and look like getting a try, but England international Maro Itoje shows his international class to rip the ball from his opponent.

However moments later a penalty is conceded and Jimmy Gopperth puts Wasps to within two points.

One thing's for sure - Wasps' Fijian Nathan Hughes has been in the wars this afternoon.

He's taken hit after hit, but after being pinned in their 22 for a couple minutes, the away side force a knock on and manage to clear their lines to thwart Sarries.

    Saracens 16-11 Wasps

It's not very often you see rugby players answering back to the referee, but Wasps' replacement Joe Launchbury has been a bit petulant.

His team-mate Josh Bassett is penalised for knocking-on deliberately, much to Launchbury's annoyance, and Sarries are suddenly on the offensive.

Another penalty follows and the title holders decide to kick for the posts, but Alex Lozowski is wayward with the boot.

Saracens probe and harry their opponents, and force the penalty as Wasps are caught offside.

Fly-half Alex Lozowski punishes his former employers by kicking the three points.

Sarries' lead is back to five points.

Changes have been made to both sides in the last few minutes, and the momentum Wasps had has been halted.

Each side has had a drop goal attempt, both of which have been unsuccessful. Tiredness setting in, or a lack of options on the pitch?

Danny Cipriani targets Sarries' Mike Ellery with a kick from hands, and Ellery is punished for tackling Marty Moore of the ball.

It's a soft, needless penalty to give away, but that's what happens when Wasps turn up the heat.

Jimmy Gopperth adds the three points the visitors have deserved for their quick start to the half.

I don't know about you but whenever I see a manager with a laptop or notepad, I create possible scenarios of what they could be looking at or making notes about.

Ordering a takeaway? Checking how England are doing in the cricket?

Surely it’s too boring to assume they’re just watching the game? Just me? Let’s forget anything was said.

More importantly, Wasps still have the territory here.

Make no mistake about it, Wasps are charged up.

More spontaneous play from Danny Cipriani, his chip and run almost leading to a try, but Sarries deal with that and the resulting surge.

The penalty is theirs and Alex Lozowski and Schalk Burger can pat themselves on the back for that defensive work.

Play has started again at Allianz Park, where we're not really any closer to knowing the outcome.

As things stand, Saracens would overtake Wasps at the top on points difference, but it's far too early to be thinking about that.

There's been a change for the visitors - Joe Simpson has replaced the injured Dan Robson at scrum-half.

It is a tactic from both sides to keep the opposition outside of the 22. The two times we have got in, we have scored and they have done the same. It shows the potency of both attacks. The only way you can get the ball to attack is through defending and that is a massive part of the game.
