  3. North was fine to continue - Mallinderpublished at 19:22

    Leicester 19-11 Northampton

One positive for Northampton amid the defeat was the return to the field of winger George North after his landing in the tackle saw him sent for a concussion assessment.

The 24-year-old has had serious head knocks before that have forced him to miss games and there were concerns when he landed awkwardly after an aerial challenge by Adam Thompstone.

However North was allowed to continue and head coach Jim Mallinder defended his decision - in consultation with the club doctor - to play on.

"If you get knocked out you can't go back on," he told BT Sport. "He wasn't knocked out, he was fine."

    Leicester 19-11 Northampton

Leicester director of rugby Richard Cockerill told BT Sport:

"There was plenty of incident early on with the yellow cards, very tight, lots of defending, we were camped on their goalline.

"We were happy with the win and it was an added bonus to take the bonus points away from them.

"We're deadly rivals, they're a good club but today was about winning. We needed to defend, if we had lost today we would have been down in sixth, seventh. If we won we're back in amongst the top four.

"We’ve got a really tough run and I just wish we could show that spirit to get over the line and finish off the game earlier."

Leicester come away from their big East Midlands derby with the four points that keeps them in touch with the boys at the top.
