Try: Scotland 14-5 Irelandpublished at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2017

    Keith Earls (Jackson missed con.)

The try actually came off a penalty advantage for Ireland, with Simon Zebo coming in off one wing to throw a long pass to Keith Earls on the other.

Tommy Seymour sniffed an interception, but could not quite grab it and Earls was in.

Paddy Jackson misses the conversion from way out wide near touch.

It's good bravery going for the try when the three points is in the bag. They had the ambition to go for it and got the reward.

It's been what we all hoped the Six Nations would be - three tries and plenty of running rugby in the first 25 minutes.

Keith Earls scampers into the corner.

There does not look a lot wrong with that but Romain Poite is going to check upstairs to make sure he stayed in play on the way in.

Christian Knott: Hogg has got to be the the Lions full back surely?

Daniel Lewis: Wow! Very impressive from Scotland.

Josh Cook: Is Stuart Hogg the world's best FB? I'd wager if he wasn't Scottish or playing for Glasgow that would be the popular opinion

Ireland are back on the front foot. Scotland's defence stretched paper thin.

Five metres to go after a run of phases.

Stuart Hogg was the name on everybody's lips coming into the tournament and a lot of people from the Home Nations were talking about him.

It all starts from a Scotland set-piece, albeit a bit scrappy. Scotland are getting round the corner quicker than the Irish defenders. It's been very easy.

Who needs scrums when you've got a man like Stuart Hogg at 15?! The man is on FIRE!

What a try - what a player he is!

Converted try: Scotland 14-0 Irelandpublished at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2017

    Stuart Hogg (con Laidlaw)

"X factor" "point of difference" "strike ability"

Whatever you want to call it, Stuart Hogg has it. In spades.

The Scotland full-back throws a little show-and-go dummy, sending Rob Kearney careering out of the action, and bursts past Keith Earls and in.

A delicious try that I'm sure that the watching Warren Gatland appreciated.

Another good kick from Greig Laidlaw for the conversion.

Ireland line-out - perhaps missing injured Peter O'Mahony's influence - is not at full bore either.

Jonny Gray pilfers to ease the pressure.

    Scotland 7-0 Ireland

Scotland's soft set-piece underbelly lets them down again.

Hooker Fraser Brown's throw-in is cock-eyed and then they give away a penalty at scrum time.

They should be deep inside Ireland territory. Instead they are pinned back on their own line once again.

There has been a real bite about Scotland's defence. Good hits but also good line speed and organisation.

Ireland centre Garry Ringrose shows some of that ghosting quality that earns him the O'Driscoll comparisons as he goes round the outside.

But Scotland have been very streetwise around the breakdown.

Finn Russell pounces on an unguarded Conor Murray and that is turnover ball.

Both Scotland and Ireland are currently sitting above 90% tackle completion.

    Scotland 7-0 Ireland

Scotland's Stuart Hogg puts his size nine through the back of the ball. Bit of a following wind and that one flies like it is on the veld in South Africa, high above sea level.

Ireland gather cleanly through Rob Kearney, but are back in their own half.

That is a missed opportunity for Joe Schmidt's men.

Ireland have built their game around a strong set-piece and strong kicking game. They have wave after wave of attack and look after the ball.

Scotland will be keen to set their stall out from the scrum and make it a contest in there.

  19. Postpublished at 14 mins

    Scotland 7-0 Ireland

Ireland could have called for the scrum after sending Scotland into reverse at the first two.

That might have been the better option.

They are pinged on a technicality - a truck-and-trailer/unclean separation one for the aficionados - and Scotland have a scrum and a chance to clear their lines.

Dave Sommerville: Gray brothers vs Toner & Henderson - the line out could be crucial today. Some fascinating Lions duels too.

Edward Poole: Is there a better time year than the 6 Nations? I don't think so! Let the battles commence!
