The Lions earn an early penalty as the Provincial Barbarians get the wrong side of the tackle zone after a Tommy Seymour dart.

It is straight in front, about 30m out and Johnny Sexton, perhaps nursing a knock, is going to leave it to Greig Laidlaw...

Just been approached by a friendly elderly lady who is from an hour south of Whangarei.

"You must be worried about the Lions?" she asks/tells me. "I know it's slippy, but they must be used to that!"

Too early for a half-time rocket from Warren Gatland?

    Let's see.

We are back up and running in the second half.

"Messy and sloppy" among the words used, but a nod towards Taulupe Faletau's first half performance."

Warren Gatland's bench is deep in quality and long on options.

Jamie George is a replacement who has a big impact on the game and the opposition.

Justin Tipuric's pace might be potent if and when the Provincial Barbarians run out of steam in the second half.

Is it too early to give Owen Farrell a go in the centres and see if a 10-12 partnership between him and Johnny Sexton can bring the Lions considerable talents into concert?

A frustrating opening 40 minutes for the Lions. They've not been able to control the tempo or territory, and that must be a focus for the second half.

Credit to the Provincial Barbarians, they have shown everything that you'll see from New Zealand come the first Test. The variation in an attacking kicking game has been challenging, plus they have counter-attacked well and played with tempo.

The only thing the All Blacks have which will be better is their execution.

For the Lions Greig Laidlaw has been tidy, while Ross Moriarty, Kyle Sinckler and Taulupe Faletau have been busy and imposing.

There's clearly no need for panic! You're only 40 minutes into your first game on tour. Simple messages - control, energy and composure - will be plenty enough for the Lions to win their opening fixture.

    That was ...underwhelming.

We are only 40 minutes into a 10-match tour though and the Lions are barely out of baggage reclaim.

While the Lions have failed to live up to the considerable hype as a whole, the individual stock of number eight Taulupe Faletau. prop Kyle Sinckler and centre Ben Te'o are all on the rise.

A half to forget for Stuart Hogg and the second-row axis of Iain Henderson and Alun Wyn Jones.

The hooter has sounded. The Provincial Barbarians are clinging on in defence, hoping to make it to the orange slice ahead.

    They are not there yet.

An offside infringement. Penalty Lions and the tourists opt for the scrum right in front of the sticks...

Taulupe Faletau goes on another rumble, low and strong. Alun Wyn Jones stretches his legs and gallops into the Provincial Barbarians 22m.

Stuart Hogg and Anthony Watson weave up to within five metres in a slender blindside channel.

Back out, lovely soft hands from Kyle Sinckler, Faletau storms onto the pass. But is held up just short.

    Red scrum five.

Johnny Sexton sends a crossfield bomb out on the full.

Another basic error under no real pressure.

The Lions have not managed to build phases or pressure. Everyone is trying a little too hard to impress so far and they are doing the opposite.

    Turnover for the Provincial Barbarians!

Cheers from the stands and bank as the Lions squander a prime piece of pitch location.

It has been a frustrating first half of rugby for the Lions so far. Under-cooked, over-tired, pick your excuse, but they have not been good enough so far.
