Hugo Woolford: very poor rugby from Stuart Hogg so far - his place in contention for the tests under threat?

Andrew Priestley: Why has everyone been calling Stuart Hogg the nailed-on starting Lions Test 15 when he simply cannot defend? Highlight-reel Hogg.

The Lions big runners are starting to make yards.

Kyle Sinckler and Ross Moriarty barrel over the advantage line in quick succession.

Then the back gets in on the act with Ben Te'o slanting into space out wide before Stuart Hogg straightens.

He is stopped just short. But the Lions have a scrum five out.

Just overhead one local say: "The Super Rugby teams are going to hammer these guys."

Too early for that, but the Lions can't spurn opportunities with poor passes like that from Hogg on this tour.

    It should be... it isn't.

The Lions open up the Provincial Barbarians for the first time as Jonathan Joseph takes a pull-back pass from Johnny Sexton, flummoxing the rush defence.

Stuart Hogg has a simple two on one with Anthony Watson firing up the jets outside him.

But the full-back's pass is dud, too far in front of Watson and what should be a saunter over the line is turned into a line-out as he is shoved out of play.

The Lions look like they have walked into an elephant trap of an opener so far.

The Provinicial Barbarians threaten again as Bryn Gatland chips wide, Sam Vaka gathers and puts a big shoulder in on Stuart Hogg as the Scotland full-back just about stops the wing.

    Sam Anderson-Heather (con Gatland)

    Well, well, well.

The first try goes the way of the team thrown together out of provincial New Zealand rugby rather than the one consisting of the cream of the British and Irish rugby.

An old-school hail Mary of an up-and-under pinballs around as it returns to earth, apparently it hasn't gone forward and the Provincial Barbarians recycle.

Sam Anderson-Heather burrows through a scattered defence from close in to score and Bryn Gatland adds the extras.

The Lions are probably behind on territory and possession.

Johnny Sexton's clearing kick fails to gain much ground and the tourists are under pressure once more.

Inga Finau - the hosts' outside centre - has had to come off by the way after twanging his shoulder in that tackle by Taulupe Faletau.

Taulupe Falateau take a bow. Outstanding cover defence - what work rate and technique to hold the man up over the line. However that was a 3v1 butchered by the hosts. It showed once again, however, how much NZ teams thrive off turnover ball.

What a tackle from Taulupe Faletau.

The Lions are cut to ribbons by a weaving, swerving run by full-back Luteru Laulala.

It's a three on one and looks a nailed on try, but with the line beckoning for Inga Finau, Faletau gets back and somehow flips the outside centre onto his back, turning him turtle and keeping the ball off the floor over the line.

Superb individual work from the Welshman, less impressive collectively from the Lions.

A stonewall penalty. And it is bang in front.

Johnny Sexton points to the sticks. The crowd have not come for that though...

As expected a disjointed start from both sides. It's really difficult to 'hit the ground running' as much as you would have been working hard in training sessions, because it's impossible to replicate the emotion of the occasion.

The Lions are looking promising in phase play. Early indicators are showing most NZ teams will be able to cope with the physicality the Lions will try and impose. There's greater emphasis on the offloading game and at the breakdown.

The tannoy man is running through some unconventional choices during breaks in play.

LunchMoney Lewis's Bills gets an airing while we wait for a scrum to set in Provincial Baa-Baas territory.

Bryn Gatland runs it from deep, slinging wide. A kick prodded forward. Stuart Hogg comes forward to gather, but the ball squirms through his legs.

No harm done, but the crowd cheer in amusement.

Not a lot to frighten the All Blacks though in the first quarter of an hour of play.

    Early days.

The Lions are starting to slip up through the gears.

Johnny Sexton offloads a blind pop pass to Tommy Seymour coming in off his wing.

Kyle Sinckler gets his thighs pumping, charging into the opposition.

But the Provincial Barbarians stand strong.

I'm standing amongst a mix of locals and Lions fans on one of the vast banks at the stadium.

Heavy boos from the home fans when Johnny Sexton chose to go for goal turned to whistles and jeers when the kick slid past the posts.

The first chance for the Lions to get their paws on the pill and the handling is sharp.

Ben Teo'o with an nice inside line, flips the ball out of the tackle to Tommy Seymour who offloads to Stuart Hogg.

It is on the Scotland full-back's bootlaces however and he can't quite pick up.

No matter. There is an infringement somewhere in back play and Johnny Sexton lines up the penalty pot-shot.
