After leading the Lions to that resounding win over the Maori - and being part of a well-balanced back row - Peter O'Mahony is certainly in pole position to captain the Lions on Saturday in the first Test.

The Lions coaches have a final selection meeting on Wednesday to decide whether to stick with the same combination, or twist by bringing in tour captain Sam Warburton, despite his lack of competitive rugby of late.

If O'Mahony does keep his place in the Saturday side it would cap a remarkable story. The Munsterman wasn't even meant to start against England in the Six Nations, but was drafted in at the last minute following Jamie Heaslip's late withdrawal. His outstanding performance led to a Lions call-up, now even the Test captaincy.

It's a beautiful, mild evening here in Hamilton, and the ground looks a picture.

Just had a chat to one of Warren Gatland's long-term friends - and former team-mate - Steve Gordon, who was in reminiscing mood as we stood in the media centre, which is on the site of the old gym where him and Gatland operated back in the day.
