But on a dry evening, the All Blacks are already playing with more width than in the first two Test matches, which is ominous for the tourists.

Sam Warburton, Maro Itoje and Alyn Wyn Jones were at the forefront of a bristling, aggressive forward performance, and will be looking for more of the same tonight.

Warburton will again be critical, attempting to snaffle opposition ball, and speed up the Lions’ by smashing the All Blacks back in the collisions.

The back row battle will be one to relish.

Speaking to Kiwi journalists and supporters around Eden Park, this is the first time they have been genuinely nervous about a home game since the World Cup final of 2011.

The All Blacks kept the Lions waiting on the field for about a minute before Kieran Read emerged alone from the tunnel to soak in the atmosphere on his 100th cap.

Atmosphere cranking up, with even the usually passive New Zealand fans trying to match the Lions fans in volume.

Selection-wise, the veteran Lion has stayed one step ahead of the eager second-row pups snapping at his heels.

Now Alun Wyn Jones has to prove that Warren Gatland has made the right choice.

The 31-year-old Welshman is starting his ninth successive Lions Test after being an ever-present in the 2009 and 2013 clashes with South Africa and Australia.

It seems, with 31 years on the clock, he is being used an 'impact starter' by the Lions. Burning bright for an hour, providing rugged physicality and slowing down the Kiwi ball, and knowing that he will be among the first withdrawn from the fray.
