But it's Ireland's Peter O'Mahony who will lead out the British and Irish Lions against New Zealand in Auckland on Saturday.

Against Australia in the final Test in 2013, Gatland selected 10 Welshman in the starting XV, equalling the Lions record.
For Saturday's first Test against New Zealand, he's picked eight Welshmen in the 23-man squad.

George North - another veteran of the 2013 series victory - has disappeared from the 23-man Test squad.
England winger Elliot Daly, with his explosive pace and versatility, takes the number 11 shirt with fellow countryman Anthony Watson on the other wing.
It appears Gatland has opted for flair rather than stability.

The Lions pack looks very, very strong and will match the All Blacks for power and even shade them at the breakdown. But the Lions backline has been setup to attack the All Blacks instead of defending against them. Fighting fire with fire. Surely that is the wrong tactic from Gatland? The Lions aren't going to win a high-scoring game against the world's very best.

This is the hardest places to Tour. This would define Gatland and make him one of the great coaches of all times if the guys win the series.

In 1997, we didn't look like scoring a try and won 18-15. They scored three. No one gives a monkeys.
If these guys beat New Zealand they will be legends. It means absolutely nothing on the style of rugby and it winds me up. It's about winning. They could lose all the provincial games and win the Tests and still be heroes.

Mark Joyce: Halfpenny as a sub makes no sense. He has no impact with ball in hand when you have the likes of North, Payne and Joseph available.
James: Exciting front and back row but AWJ starting over Itoje is ridiculous!
Ryan Wells: AWJ over Itoje is criminal. Halfpenny on the bench seems pointless. Williams a possible weak link? Not a bad team though!

Well, during this year's Six Nations, Peter O'Mahony didn't look like he'd even be going on the Lions tour.
A knee injury had kept him out for almost a year after the 2015 World Cup and he had lost his place in the Ireland team to CJ Stander.
The 27-year-old only started one game for Ireland in this year's competition - but what a game it was.
When Jamie Heaslip got injured in the warm-up before Ireland's final match against England, O'Mahony got the nod.
He went on to win man of the match as Ireland beat England to deny Eddie Jones' side a second successive Grand Slam.

It's not as big a concern. The All Blacks do not make as many mistakes as other teams so you will not get many scrums against them on your own ball. They are also a team which will not try to milk every scrum for a penalty. They traditionally do not do that. So I think the importance of experience in scrummages is still important but it's not imperative.

Peter O'Mahony, who emerged as a late contender for captain, is picked ahead of tour captain Sam Warburton.
Liam Williams and Elliot Daly - who both had stormers in the final warm-up game against the Chiefs - are given Test starts.
Anthony Watson starts on the right wing, with Daly picked ahead of George North on the left and Leigh Halfpenny starts on the bench.
Owen Farrell has recovered from his quad injury to take his place at fly-half.
