David Adams: Bold back 3 selection but the right call. Williams had a good series for wales in NZ last year and a great game v chiefs with Daly.

Mike Hav: Ridiculous, Disgusting,Criminal, Disgraceful. I'm sorry Tweeps, these are hardly words needed to describe selection

Not a whole lot of love for this Test team out there.

Thank goodness for these former Lions players...

  4. Guscott predicted it...published at 20:49 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

Here’s what former Lions and England centre and BBC pundit Jeremy Guscott said in his column the day of the tour squad announcement in April...

    Quote Message

People will think what chance does Peter O'Mahony have of starting in that Test team? I think he has every chance, just look at his performance in his last game against England. If he goes out and plays before the first Test with that kind of intensity and impact he will stand a chance.

Although he did tip Sam Warburton and CJ Stander to join O'Mahony in the back row.

Against Australia in the final Test in 2013, Gatland selected 10 Welshman in the starting XV, equalling the Lions record.

For Saturday's first Test against New Zealand, he's picked eight Welshmen in the 23-man squad.

Is that any better for the critics?

Stop all the Welsh hating- picking AWJ makes a perfect sense to me with Otoje a brilliant impact sub. Jules

Former England outside centre Mike Tindall seems pleasantly surprised.

  8. Electric backline?published at 20:37 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

Leigh Halfpenny, the 2013 player of the series against Australia, has been ousted by Wales team-mate Liam Williams at full-back, but does earn a place on the bench.

George North - another veteran of the 2013 series victory - has disappeared from the 23-man Test squad.

England winger Elliot Daly, with his explosive pace and versatility, takes the number 11 shirt with fellow countryman Anthony Watson on the other wing.

It appears Gatland has opted for flair rather than stability.

    Not so boring after all?

‪The Lions pack looks very, very strong and will match the All Blacks for power and even shade them at the breakdown. But the Lions backline has been setup to attack the All Blacks instead of defending against them. Fighting fire with fire. Surely that is the wrong tactic from Gatland? The Lions aren't going to win a high-scoring game against the world's very best. ‬

    Matt Dawson

This is the hardest places to Tour. This would define Gatland and make him one of the great coaches of all times if the guys win the series.

Former New Zealand fly-half Andrew Mehrtens on BBC Radio 5 live: "I've been very impressed by the Lions. I can't wait for the Test.

"I've loved Liam Williams and have done since he had a great tour here with Wales. He brings something extra, his combination, his counter-attacking. It's a strong Lions side and I can't wait for the game."

  12. Boring Lions?published at 20:28 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    Matt Dawson
    Former Lions and England scrum-half

In 1997, we didn't look like scoring a try and won 18-15. They scored three. No one gives a monkeys.

If these guys beat New Zealand they will be legends. It means absolutely nothing on the style of rugby and it winds me up. It's about winning. They could lose all the provincial games and win the Tests and still be heroes.

Plenty of reaction to Warren Gatland's starting XV to face New Zealand on Saturday.

England's Maro Itoje, the youngest player on tour, takes his place on the bench as experienced lock Alun Wyn Jones is preferred in the second-row.

A few of you have voiced your opinions on that one.

Mark Joyce: Halfpenny as a sub makes no sense. He has no impact with ball in hand when you have the likes of North, Payne and Joseph available.

James: Exciting front and back row but AWJ starting over Itoje is ridiculous!

Ryan Wells: AWJ over Itoje is criminal. Halfpenny on the bench seems pointless. Williams a possible weak link? Not a bad team though!

Not a lot of love for the Welsh players then...

  15. More on the man O'Mahonypublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    Peter O'MahonyImage source, Getty Images

O'Mahony as captain. A big surprise?

Well, during this year's Six Nations, Peter O'Mahony didn't look like he'd even be going on the Lions tour.

A knee injury had kept him out for almost a year after the 2015 World Cup and he had lost his place in the Ireland team to CJ Stander.

The 27-year-old only started one game for Ireland in this year's competition - but what a game it was.

When Jamie Heaslip got injured in the warm-up before Ireland's final match against England, O'Mahony got the nod.

He went on to win man of the match as Ireland beat England to deny Eddie Jones' side a second successive Grand Slam.

  16. Lack of experience in scrum a problem?published at 20:14 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    Brian Moore
Former England hooker on BBC Radio 5 live

It's not as big a concern. The All Blacks do not make as many mistakes as other teams so you will not get many scrums against them on your own ball. They are also a team which will not try to milk every scrum for a penalty. They traditionally do not do that. So I think the importance of experience in scrummages is still important but it's not imperative.

Andrew Priestley: After seeing that Lions back three selection the All Blacks will be licking their lips. Liam Williams has been poor all tour.

Paul Mulligan: Delighted to see O'Mahony as captain. His pairing with O, external'Brien looks formidable!

Chris: What's the point of Halfpenny being on the bench? AWJ being there a disgrace, let alone starting.

  19. Gatland rings the changespublished at 20:08 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    So there we have it.

Peter O'Mahony, who emerged as a late contender for captain, is picked ahead of tour captain Sam Warburton.

Liam Williams and Elliot Daly - who both had stormers in the final warm-up game against the Chiefs - are given Test starts.

Anthony Watson starts on the right wing, with Daly picked ahead of George North on the left and Leigh Halfpenny starts on the bench.

Owen Farrell has recovered from his quad injury to take his place at fly-half.

Has Warren Gatland ditched 'Warren-ball'? Is this the Lions' most attacking side?
