  1. O'Mahony the headline actpublished at 20:05 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    Chris Jones
BBC 5 live rugby union reporter

Peter O'Mahony being captain is the headline. Remember he was late to this tour in some ways as he wasn't even meant to face England but Jamie Heaslip was injured so he did and had a blinder.

  2. Will they gel?published at 20:04 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    Brian Moore
Former England hooker on BBC Radio 5 live

I thought he would go with North on the wing. That's because you'd want your combination to have played more than once. So it's a risk picking these players as they may not gel in the way you would want them to.

Andrew Priestley: O'Mahony, (C) with a back-3 of North, Watson and Halfpenny for me. Henderson, Warburton and Daly on the bench with no AW Jones.

John McEnerney: Both O'Brien & O'Mahony are playing the house down & Sam isn't close 2 their level at the moment. Bench spot for the tour captain.

The Lions are touring New Zealand for the first time in 12 years, and they're on the hunt for revenge.

They suffered a 3-0 series whitewash against the All Blacks back in 2005.

The thinking is they need to put a marker down in the first Test to have any hope of to claiming a first series victory since 1971.

But the All Blacks haven't lost at Eden Park since 1994.

A mammoth task ahead then for Gatland's chosen 23.

New Zealand released their team news earlier today...at five o'clock local time.

    Mind games perhaps?

Number eight Kieran Read has recovered from a broken thumb to captain the side in the first Test.

Wing Rieko Ioane - a familiar name by now having already featured twice against the Lions this tour - will earn his first Test start.

And Ryan Crotty has also recovered from a rib injury to partner Sonny Bill Williams in the centre.

  12. The tough, tough callspublished at 19:53 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    Ian McGeechanImage source, Getty Images

Four-time Lions head coach Sir Ian McGeechan, external tells BBC Radio 5 live: "You can have all the analysis. In the end you have to have a gut feel about the right person. You have to sleep on it and know, in your gut, that you're happy with what you've done.

"The biggest call I've ever made was the two props in 1997. We decided we couldn't hold the scrum physically and had to do it technically. Martin Johnson was part of the conversation. It was a collective call.

"Simon Shaw was one I got wrong in 2009, first Test. I should have known better as I knew how good he was and the influence he had on players. In that physicality you needed a big man, power and skill, he had it."

One of the biggest questions remains unanswered: who will lead the Lions?

Tour captain Sam Warburton and former Lions Test skipper Alun Wyn Jones could both be struggling to make the starting XV.

So Irishman Peter O'Mahony - the man who only started one Six Nations game this year - has emerged as the surprise front-runner.

The 27-year-old was given the captaincy in the Lions' victory over the NZ Maori last weekend.

And if we see that same back row of O'Mahony, Sean O'Brien and Taulupe Faletau elevated to the Test team, he could well be the Lions' leading man.

Terrible. It's not nice. In 1997 we were given letters under the door at 5am. There was no sleep at all the night before. I was thrilled to come out on the right side of that. It reminded me of passing my driving test, running around the room.

It's a tough time too as for all the players that are in, there are more who are out. How do those disappointed players take it? Because it's the unity which will win the Tests in the end.

  16. Last chance to shinepublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

The Lions midweek side impressed in their final audition as they ran out 34-6 winners over Super Rugby side the Chiefs in Hamilton on Tuesday.

England's Jack Nowell scored two tries to become the tour's joint top-try scorer.

Liam Williams impressed at full-back and fly-half Dan Biggar added gloss to a morale-boosting performance with the boot.

But it was winger Elliot Daly who could yet come into focus after a fine attacking display surely propelled him into Warren Gatland's thinking.

    Backs

    11. George North or Elliot Daly

10/12. Two of Owen Farrell, Ben Te'o and Johnny Sexton

    Forwards

    6. Peter O'Mahony or Sam Warburton

    7. Sean O'Brien or Sam Warburton

  18. The long debate...published at 19:43 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    Chris Jones
BBC 5 live rugby union reporter in New Zealand

I'm told it was a two-hour long selection meeting. I'm also told the players do not yet know. It seems if that's true that they will not find out too much before we do.

  19. Postpublished at 19:41 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

The Lions results have been a mixed bag so far this tour.

They've suffered two defeats to Super Rugby sides Highlanders and Blues but have four wins under their belts.

They've certainly turned up the heat in the last two matches, but which players were too late to the party?

    Matt Dawson
    Former Lions and England scrum-half

There are a few positions Gatland will be mulling over. The back three, the fly half but for me the back row is the crucial position. It's a tough, tough decision for Gatland to make.

Who is going to be captain?
