The Azzurre missed out on qualification in 2006, 2010 and 2014, but made the cut on merit for the first time for this year's competition.
They started their campaign in Dublin with a 24-12 defeat by three-time finalists USA.
England beat the Italians, who are ranked ninth in the world, 29-15 in the 2017 Six Nations on their way to the Grand Slam, and have won all 15 of the fixtures between the two nations.

Defending champions England got off to a near-perfect start in the World Cup on Wednesday - and once again Kay Wilson was the star of the show.
The winger, who scored a record seven tries against Scotland in the Six Nations, crossed four times as England earned a 56-5 win over world number eight Spain.
But the Red Roses are keeping everything in check.
"We're happy to get a win under our belts," said captain Sarah Hunter, who starts on the bench against Italy.
"It's job one done. There's plenty for us to improve for our next game."
New Zealand 121-0 Hong Kong
There was another big win for New Zealand and another big defeat for Hong Kong.
The Black Ferns won 121-0 against the tournament debutants, as Portia Woodman ran in eight tries.
Hong Kong suffered a 98-0 defeat against Canada in their opener.
New Zealand, the four-time winners, and Canada, the 2014 finalists, are firm favourites to make it out of Pool A and into the knockouts.
