The game tonight is in Bloemfontein in the heartland of the Afrikaner. I was there once, in 1998, when Ireland got annihilated by the Springboks. I went for a dodgy meal in a dodgy restaurant on the Saturday night - we weren’t exactly spoiled for choice - and contracted Hepatitis A. So that was nice.

    Cheetahs v Glasgow (18:30 BST)

Glasgow were one of only two teams - Munster was the other - to beat the Cheetahs at altitude last season at their Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.

The hosts have suffered two heavy defeats on their travels this term - 38-0 at Munster, 46-14 at Ospreys - so will be looking for a boost from their first home game of the season.

Coach Franco Smith - a former Springboks fly-half - has named an all-new front-row of Charles Marais, Joseph Dweba and Aranos Coetzee, while lock Walt Steenkamp replaces Justin Basson, who is suffering from pneumonia.

An injury to Jaco Wiese means Aidon Davis moves to number eight with Gerhard Olivier coming into the side, and Tian Meyer starts ahead of Shaun Venter at scrum-half.

  4. No Hogg for Glasgow but Price is rightpublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 15 September 2018

    Cheetahs v Glasgow (18:30 BST)

There is no Stuart Hogg for Glasgow today. The Scotland full-back has not quite shaken off an ankle niggle picked up towards the end of last week's win over Munster, but could be fit for the second game of Warriors' South African sojourn next Saturday against Southern Kings.

Into the number 15 jersey for his first start of the season comes Ruaridh Jackson, the experienced Scotland back who excelled in the role last season while Hogg was injured or away on international duty.

Elsewhere, two more Scotland internationals come into the Glasgow backline. Alex Dunbar takes over at outside centre from the ill Nick Grigg, while a "really lean" Ali Price - who coach Dave Rennie said returned from Six Nations duty out of shape last term - gets the nod over George Horne at scrum-half.

Up front, a knee injury sustained by co-captain Ryan Wilson sees the versatile Rob Harley revert to blind-side flanker, with Scott Cummings starting at lock.

There could also be a first sighting this season of Scotland centre Huw Jones, who is poised to make his comeback from wrist surgery from the bench.

  5. Can Warriors tame Cheetahs again?published at 18:13 British Summer Time 15 September 2018

    Cheetahs v Glasgow (18:30 BST)

    Evening all.

Last night Edinburgh made heavy weather of beating Connacht at Murrayfield. Tonight it's Scotland's other pro team, Glasgow Warriors, in Pro14 action, this time in South Africa.

Cheetahs may be the fastest animals on earth but it is Glasgow who have been quickest out of the traps again this season.

The Warriors won 10 league games in a row at the start of last season, with number six in that run a notable win over the Cheetahs at altitude in Bloemfontein.

Dave Rennie's side have made another strong start this term, winning their opening two league matches. Will tonight be number three?
