Earlier today, Cambridge won the women's Varsity match as they held off a late Oxford fightback to win 8-5 at Twickenham.

The Light Blues' victory was their 13th in the fixture, after last year's 24-0 win, bringing them closer Oxford's 19.

Cambridge went ahead when Emily Pratt crossed in the first half, before Alice Elgar's penalty made it 8-0 after the break in a dominant Cambridge display.

Late on, Oxford rallied and Katie Collis went over for a consolation try.

Oxford's line-up does not have as many returning players, although they can call on plenty of professional experience.

Oxford will be hoping it is third time lucky this afternoon as they try and get Dark Blue hands back on the trophy for the first time since 2015.

Last year Cambridge recorded a 20-10 win over their rivals - they led 13-3 through tries from Chris Bell and Archie Russell before Will Wilson reduced the deficit to three points.

But a late Charlie Amesbury try sealed victory for Cambridge to give the Light Blues back-to-back wins for the first time since 2007 when they recorded a third successive win.

Oxford have have not won the Varsity match as many times as Cambridge (they trail 59 to 63), but they do hold the record for the most consecutive victories.

Between 2010 and 2015 they won the title an unprecedented six times in succession.

Cambridge have won five in-a-row on three occasions (1972-76, 1980-84 and 1994-98).

The Light Blues also held the title for a record eight-year spell from 1938 to losing to Oxford in 1946 - although the game was not held between 1939 and 1944 because of the Second World War.

The first Varsity match was played in 1872, making it one of the world’s longest running sporting fixtures.

The two sides have met 136 times, Cambridge have won 63 times to Oxford's 59.

In those years some of the biggest names in rugby have competed - legendary England fly-half Rob Andrew, Wales centre Jamie Roberts and Scotland full-back Gavin Hastings have all played for Cambridge, as well as the British and Irish Lions.

Oxford can boast former England stars Phil de Glanville, Victor Ubogu and Stuart Barnes among their alumni.
