Scotland hooker Fraser Brown told BBC Scotland: "It was real hard conditions out there, the ball was very greasy and there was a lot of kicking, a lot of pressure.

"It was pleasing in the end. We maybe didn't manage that middle period of the game particularly well, but the bench had a really good impact and controlled that last 10 minutes pretty well.

"Even in these conditions, we don't want to go into our shells and play a negative game. Teams tighten up a little bit defensively because they think you're going to play tight. There are still lots of opportunities to attack - we just didn't execute well.

"It's great to bounce back after last week, particularly in these conditions, and Argentina were going to be fired up for the last game of their season."

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend was pleased with his side's character in defence, as much as he praised the communication and execution of Stuart Hogg in spotting the space and creating the decisive try for Sean Maitland.

"A couple of times in the second half our defensive line was breached but we got back in numbers to stop Argentina scoring tries," Townsend told BBC Sport. "I am impressed the team found a way to win.

"We were tested today. Argentina kept the ball for a lot of phases and they played well. The conditions meant it wasn't going to be a game won off passing the ball wide.

"We didn't have our best first half admittedly, but I felt second half we brought more energy to the game and did enough to win."

Captain Pablo Matera accentuated the positives for Argentina, despite a fifth straight Test defeat.

"It was a really tough game," he said. "Either of the teams could have won today. It is a tough way to finish our season but next year is an important year and I think we are going to take a lot from this game. I am sure it is going to help us become a better team next year.

"I think we are in a good position [approaching the World Cup]. We have had a lot of growth this year and we are improving a lot. Our way of playing is a lot better than last year, and we are going to keep improving and be a stronger team."

Scotland scrum-half Greig Laidlaw on BBC One:

"I felt we had control during the game and did enough to win it. The conditions dictated how we played. International rugby is about winning, and we have beaten a strong Argentina team, so we are delighted with the win.

"You have got to be patient on days like that - don't try to attack too early and play in the right areas. The forwards put us in the right areas and it was a great call from Hoggy for the try, to go to the short-side, and we got our reward."

Nicolas Sanchez opts to take the points, rather than go for seven, and Argentina are back within five heading into the final five minutes.

Let-off for Scotland after a cracking break from Pumas full-back Emiliano Boffelli, but centre Jeronimo De la Fuente loses the ball in the tackle 5m out, giving Scotland a relieving scrum.

That Sean Maitland try ensures Scotland have scored in all of their last 26 Tests since a 21-16 win against Japan on their summer tour of 2016, when all the points came from the boot.
