    Newcastle 17-10 Gloucester

    Rob Vickerman
BBC Radio 5 live at Kingston Park

The scoreboard is now ticking over for the home team.

Gloucester’s discipline is letting them down as another shot at goal by Sonatane Takulua makes it 17-10.

He has calves like a Parma ham joint and there’s serious power in them!

  3. Penalty - Newcastle 17-10 Gloucesterpublished at 16:24 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2018

    Sonatane Takulua

Gloucester's indiscipline is hurting them here as they are pinged again midway in front of their own points, around 35m out.

Sonatane Takulua doesn't need a second invitation and slots over his fourth penalty of the afternoon.

  4. try

Try - Wasps 14-24 Bathpublished at 16:20 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2018

    Thomas Young, missed con

Ironic cheers from the crowd as Wasps are awarded a breakdown penalty.

They go straight for the corner and new hooker Tom Cruse finds Nathan Hughes.

Thomas Young escapes up the blind side and Wasps have a much-needed response.

Billy Searle is way off with the extras from a long-way out.

    Wasps 9-24 Bath

Nathan Hughes and Dan Robson among five replacements for Wasps who now have serious work to do.

Robson back after 11 weeks out with an ankle injury.

  6. Penalty - Newcastle 14-10 Gloucesterpublished at 16:18 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2018

    Sonatane Takulua

Simple points for Newcastle and is owes much to a 40 break by prop Logovi'i Mulipola which handed the Falcons field position.

And, after a period of pressure by the hosts, Gloucester infringe and Sonatane Takulua slots over a straightforward penalty.

  7. try

Try - Wasps 9-24 Bathpublished at 16:16 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2018

    Will Chudley

Wasps knock-on and then concede a free-kick from the scrum.

Freddie Burns sends a scudding low-kick deep into the Wasps 22 and then Ashley Johnson is called for dummying the line-out throw.

So Bath have a put-in eight yards out from the Wasps line. It's messy but they retain possession and pick and drive towards the posts.

Phase after phase they go and finally Will Chudley gets it down against the post.

Easy conversion and Bath are clear.

Bath had an edge at the scrum so far and they get a good drive on here, Nathan Catt receives the pats on the back.

It gives Freddie Burns an early chance to extend the Bath lead - and he's on target from just outside the left-hand post on the 22.

Nizaam Carr returns from the sin-bin.

    Wasps 9-14 Bath

    Chris Jones
BBC rugby union reporter on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

    Error-strewn but compelling stuff here.

Bath power and set-piece winning out against a Wasps team full of pace and dynamism, but unable to establish a platform.

Wasps increasingly frustrated with the referee towards the end of the half and have to play five minutes with a man down.

Before kick-off today, the Daily Mail's rugby union correspondent Chris Foy was on BBC Radio 5 live.

And what he had to say won't come as welcome news to Wasps fans....

    Quote Message

My understanding is Elliot Daly to Saracens is more or less a done deal. Nathan Hughes to Bristol also I've heard that's going to happen and Willie Le Roux to Japan.

That's the last action of the half as the referee's whistle goes for the break.

It looked like those two Solatane Takulua penalties would see Newcastle in front at the break but that Ed Slater try means it is Gloucester who have their noses in front.

    Ed Slater, con Billy Twelvetrees

And that final shot that Rob Vickerman was telling us about results in a try.

Gloucester pick and go, pick and go and pick and go again before Ed Slater powers over under the posts on the stroke of half-time.

    Billy Twelvetrees adds the extras.

It was an even game until Freddie Burns scooted in for the only try of the half.

Since then, Bath have had some control and lead at the break.

They will also have a man advantage for four minutes of the second-half too.

All getting a bit heated as Gloucester knock-on at the line-out.

Still 6-3 and tensions coming through after a frustrating half that isn’t yet coming to life.

It results in a chance for Gloucester to have a last shot from a driving line-out.

  20. Penalty - Wasps 9-14 Bathpublished at 15:46 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2018

    Billy Searle

Dave Attwood's deliberate knock-on around half-way gives Wasps a last chance of the half.

Line-out on the 22 goes short and Bath are penalised for encroaching towards the catcher.

So a chance for Billy Searle from 15 yards in from the left-wing on the 22 and he makes no mistake.
