Not many teams win in Toulon. I know Newcastle did it, but certainly not many French teams win there, even with their poor start to the league campaign. Montpellier aren't firing on all cylinders either. It's a difficult one to call and even more difficult to understand where their priorities lie. Usually with the French, it's the Top 14.

What a great second half. There was an edge to Edinburgh. I can only think Cockerill has read them the riot act at half-time and most importantly, they reacted exceptionally

    Table

The table makes very sweet reading for Edinburgh fans tonight.

Three games played, two won, and three bonus points in the bag.

Montpellier travel to Toulon tomorrow in a game Vern Cotter's men really need to win.

  5. Full-time Edinburgh 31-13 Newcastle Falconspublished at 21:31 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2018

Job done for Edinburgh. Maximum points secured against an under-strength Newcastle side, and that sends them to the top of Champions Cup Pool 5.

Falcons were missing a ton of firepower but gave a very good account of themselves, particularly in the first half, when Adam Radwan's try and fine kicking from Brett Connon gave them a 13-10 lead at the break.

Edinburgh ground them down after the break with some clever rugby and a few moments of class.

Chris Dean blazed over, adding to Hamish Watson's first-half try. Their scrum, up against a cobbled-together Falcons front-row, won a penalty try. And Blair Kinghorn sealed the bonus point with a fantastic broken-field score.

Reaction from Richard Cockerill and our BBC Radio Scotland pundits to follow...

Into the final minute, and Edinburgh are still on the ball, still gunning for try number five of the night.

  7. Edinburgh turn the screwpublished at 76 mins

    Edinburgh 31-13 Newcastle Falcons

Edinburgh are camped on the Newcastle line, pressing hard for a fifth try.

Bill Mata came very close to getting it, but was brilliantly tackled at the corner.

    Blair Kinghorn

That was sensational. Bonus point in the bag.

Kinghorn fields a high ball no his own 10m line. He gives it to Graham, and loops round the back of his team-mate.

It's then all about Bill Mata, who sucks in one defender, and releases Van der Walt with a delightfully-delayed back-hand off-load.

Van der Walt races up the right, Kinghorn's tracking up inside and the South African gives his full-back a run-in with a well-placed kick.

He gathers it, scores, and Van der Walt converts.

  9. Socino v Socinopublished at 70 mins

    Edinburgh 24-13 Newcastle Falcons

The brothers Socino are on, hooker Santi replacing McGuigan in the Falcons front-row.

Meanwhile, Johnny Williams has come on for Alex Tait at full-back and Simon Uzokwe replaces Callum Chick.

    Edinburgh 24-13 Newcastle Falcons

No, they can't. Not yet anyway. They knock it on and Edinburgh clear, but back come Falcons.

A searing break from Radwan, the try-scorer, bamboozles the Edinburgh chasers, and it's replacement hooker Dave Cherry who drags him down with a quite sensational cover-tackle.

Cherry was playing for Stade Nicois last year in the fourth tier of French rugby.

He's taken a sore one amid those heroics so McInally comes back on.

Nathan Fowles replaces Pyrgos at scrum-half and former Falcon Juan Pablo Socino is on for James Johnstone.

Two penalties in quick succession allow Falcons to ramp up the pressure.

They have the ball deep in Edinburgh territory. Can they make it count?

Great cover-tackle from Arscott. Graham's feet were in touch - just - before he grounded the ball.

Darcy Graham scampers up the right and dives for the whitewash. It looked like his feet might have been dragged into touch by Tom Arscott.

  16. Edinburgh chasing bonus pointpublished at 61 mins

    Edinburgh 24-13 Newcastle Falcons

Edinburgh need one more try to secure a bonus point.

Richard Cockerill has made a few changes as his team pursue that very aim.

Both props, Schoeman and Nel, are off, replaced by Allan Dell and Simon Berghan.

And in the back-row, Luke Hamilton comes for Jamie Ritchie.

    Penalty Try

Edinburgh go for the scrum. Surprise-surprise, they win the penalty.

Scrum-down again. It's rumbling for the whitewash. Down it goes. Penalty try. It was coming.

  19. Duhan deniedpublished at 55 mins

    Edinburgh 17-13 Newcastle Falcons

    Almost a third Edinburgh try.

Peirre Schoeman breaks off a maul deep in Falcons territory.

Fellow South African Duhan van der Merwe batters up the left flank but gets hauled into touch a few metres short.

Edinburgh had a penalty coming and go to the corner again. Another maul, another penalty. And a talking-to for the Falcons captain Burrows.
