  1. Falcons putting in the hard yardspublished at 27 mins

    Edinburgh 7-3 Newcastle

Newcastle have only had 28% possession. Already, four of their forwards are into double figures on the tackle count.

A knock-on ends their first attacking opportunity from that line-out after a decent first-phase move creates space.

  2. Postpublished at 25 mins

    Edinburgh 7-3 Newcastle Falcons

It's getting a bit frenetic. Edinburgh still with all the ball, but it's very unstructured and there are players and passes flying everywhere.

Van der Walt decides he's had enough of the chaos and punts downfield. Arscott returns. Kinghorn tries to prod one into the corner but it flies out on the full and Newcastle have the line-out.

The 80 minutes are what is important and Edinburgh having all this possession will take a lot out of Newcastle

  4. Postpublished at 22 mins

    Edinburgh 7-3 Newcastle Falcons

It's windy at Murrayfield. Really windy.

Chris Dean is an excellent distributor but as he tries to rip a spin-pass off his right hand, the ball squirts forward.

The pass looks horrendous, particularly with the way the wind shunts it several yards in front of its intended target.

  5. Precision Pyrgospublished at 19 mins

    Edinburgh 7-3 Newcastle Falcons

More Edinburgh attack around the halfway line culminates with a cracking Henry Pyrgos grubber-kick that fizzes into touch near the corner flag.

Newcastle's line-out is safe and they clear downfield but Edinburgh will come at them again.

That's the way to do it. Have 17 pick and goes and when you've got five metres of space, pass it out to the backs. It's maybe what Edinburgh need to settle the nerves

  8. converted try

Converted try Edinburgh 7-3 Newcastle Falconspublished at 16 mins

    Hamish Watson

Edinburgh go for the corner. Big Bill Mata blasts forward off the line-out drive.

Newcastle rally, but the waves of forwards keep coming and coming.

Schoeman, McInally, Watson, Nel, Mata again.

They inch closer and closer to the whitewash and eventually, pop the ball up the blind-side where Watson can stroll home.

Jaco van der Walt's conversion is good, with a little help from the inside of the post.

  10. Edinburgh bungle againpublished at 12 mins

    Edinburgh 0-3 Newcastle Falcons

This time the line-out goes to plan for Edinburgh and they muscle their way to within five metres of the line.

There's a stray home boot in Henry Pyrgos' way, though, and that causes the scrum-half to spill the ball.

Newcastle clear again. But once more, they can't get out of their own 22 and Edinburgh have another crack.

There's yet another knock-on but Edinburgh had the penalty advantage

  11. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Edinburgh 0-3 Newcastle Falcons

Excellent work from Hamish Watson, isolating George McGuigan and winning Edinburgh a penalty.

They go to the corner in this difficult wind but their line-out is pinched.

Connon clears but can't find any real distance from the kick.

Another chance for the home side from the set-piece...

  12. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Edinburgh 0-3 Newcastle Falcons

This is the first time Edinburgh gets hands on ball for any length of time as they rack up the phases aroud halfway.

Bill Mata and Duhan van der Merwe, two of their biggest attacking threats, make decent carries.

Eventually, though, Henry Pyrgos sends up the box kick and Falcons attempt to bring the ball away again.

  13. Penalty Edinburgh 0-3 Newcastle Falconspublished at 6 mins

    Brett Connon

Sam Lockwood barrels into contact and in Edinburgh's eagerness to turn him over, they infringe.

Brett Connon steps up and bangs over the first points of the match.

  14. It's scrum-timepublished at 4 mins

    Edinburgh 0-0 Newcastle Falcons

Well, after those front-row changes, the first scrum ought to hold some intrigue.

Edinburgh have the put-in and win a free-kick for an early engagement.

They cough up the ball, though, and Falcons boot it long. Darcy Graham gets bundled into touch in his own 22 and suddenly Newcastle are attacking.

The list of Scottish former Falcons is long and distinguished.

Doddie Weir, Gary Armstrong, George Graham and Alan Tait helped Newcastle win the Premiership 20 years ago.

Stuart Grimes wasn't far behind. Phil Godman earned his stripes as a young fly-half following the lead of Jonny Wilkinson.

Former Scotland captains Rory Lawson and Mike Blair are also ex-Falcons. So are Euan Murray, Tim Swinson and Tim Visser.

More recently Scott Lawson and Ally Hogg helped Richards' men to the Premiership semi-finals before retiring at the end of last season.

Now, Jon Welsh, Chris Harris, Glen Young, John Hardie and Andrew Davidson are part of the Falcons squad.

  18. 'You mix it with Deano at your peril'published at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2018

    Edinburgh v Newcastle Falcons

Heavy cotton jerseys. Cauliflower ears. Fists flying. Not a TMO in sight...

Back in their playing days, a young and hungry Richard Cockerill was schooled in the confrontational ways of Leicester Tigers by Dean Richards.

Cockerill's a pretty tough bloke, but he tells a yarn about the time he inadvertently roused the wrath of his massive former team-mate.

“We were playing ‘touch’ in training. I’d turned to chase Matt Poole and as I did so I felt someone grab my shirt and pull me back,” Cockerill wrote in his 1999 autobiography.

“Without a second thought I swung my arm back and smashed whoever did it right in the chops. Of course, that person had to be Deano, didn’t it?

“He rubbed his jaw for a moment then he grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and started laying into me.

“He was punching me and I was trying to avoid his fists because he’s not exactly the weakest of men. A few blows were traded but I can assure you the vast majority landed on one place – the top of my head. You mix it with Deano at your peril.”

We might see some brotherly love if Argentine siblings Juan Pablo and Santi Socino appear for their respective teams.

Centre Juan Pablo, the elder by four years, left Falcons for Edinburgh in the summer and started against Munster last week.

Hooker Santi has been at Newcastle since 2015. He's younger but rather more beefy than his sibling - 16kg heavier to be exact.

I reckon he'd have the edge in any Socino v Socino tussles...
