So a chastening night for Adam Hastings, and a chastening one for Glasgow.

The young fly-half said earlier this week that Warriors were looking at these two festive derbies as an opportunity to take 10 points.

That certainly came back to bite him today, with two passes picked off by Duhan van Merwe for two Edinburgh tries.

These two sides will do it all again next Saturday at Scotstoun, when Glasgow will be intent on a measure of revenge, you'd imagine.

Glasgow Warriors coach Dave Rennie said his side's performance was "a massive disappointment".

"It was well under the intensity and accuracy we’ve been playing with over the last few months," he told BBC Scotland.

"We defended well for long patches.The disappointment was on the attack.

"We knew they were going to kick a lot of ball to us and knew how they were going to defend, but we got too lateral and we tried to throw passes over the top and they got picked off. We created our own problems."

Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill was "delighted with the result and delighted with the performance" of his side.

"I thought we were outstanding," he told BBC Scotland. "We pressured them into making errors and took advantage of that. We deserved to win.

"Glasgow are different from us and play some great rugby. They are a hard team to play against. You have to stop them getting into their rhythm and we did that with our defence.

"We got into their passing channels and it's high-risk rugby. You an say we got a bit fortunate with the interceptions but it goes both ways.

"We’ll take the win. I'm really proud of the performance, It shows we’re a good team, which is pleasing. We’re a tough team to beat."

Edinburgh captain Stuart McInally is understandably happy with what he called a "brilliant" performance from his side

"We knew how dangerous their runners were but I felt our defence won us the game," he tells BBC Scotland. "We caused a lot of problems for them, and caused them to throw long passes.

"Duhan [van der Merwe] was exceptional and managed to pick off two of them, and that was the difference.

"I think we controlled the game well and looked after the ball. They defended well in the first half but we knew if we kept going, they couldn't do that all game. I am really proud of everyone."

That victory - their fifth from 11 league games - lifts Edinburgh above Benetton into fourth place in the Pro14's Conference B, four points behind Scarlets in third.

Glasgow remain well clear at the top of Conference A, their lead cut by a point to six from Munster in second.

The match ends with Pete Horne throwing a flat pass straight into touch. Which just about sums up Glasgow's day.

For Edinburgh, it's a seventh win out of seven at Murrayfield this season, and a third win out of four against Glasgow for head coach Richard Cockerill since his arrival in the Scottish capital.

We're into injury time now, and Glasgow are still hammering away at the Edinburgh line.

Can Glasgow muster a late try? Ali Price stabs a kick through and Huw Jones chases it down, but he can't get it under control and ultimately it's a knock-on, scrum to Edinburgh.

This game is rather petering out.

Duhan van der Merwe has unsurprisingly been named man of the match, and you can't really argue with that. His blistering pace saw Edinburgh take the two real chances they had.

The big wing now has 17 tries in 30 games for the capital club.

Pete Horne dinks a kick towards the left touchline, but Huw Jones can't quite gather it as the ball eludes him. Nothing going right for Glasgow...

Edinburgh are emptying their bench. Nathan Fowles and Simon Hickey are on at half-back, Juan Pablo Socino at centre.

Huw Jones runs down a blind alley down the left flank, and is bundled into touch. Sums up the general lack of direction in Glasgow's play today.

That's his day done. The only replacement left for Warriors is hooker Kevin Bryce, so someone will be playing out of position.

Edinburgh look like they have this game won.

They decide to give two of their mainstays - Stuart McInally and Ben Toolis - a rest, sending on Dave Cherry and Callum Hunter-Hill for the final 15 minutes.
