Blair Kinghorn, on for Tommy Seymour, is penalised for a high tackle, which draws a passionate cry of "garbage" from BBC pundit Peter Wright, who is never too keen on the officials.

France kick to the corner.

Approving cheers as Felix Lambey is absolutely nailed by Blade Thomson off the back of a French line-out and that leads to a turnover and Scotland have men streaming forward. The crowd are on their feet but referee Wayne Barnes spots a man in blue off his feet when he shouldn't be.

Damian Penaud celebrates his early score with a big L on his forehead. Lucky? Not at all. He was razor sharp to snaffle up a Scottish error and then turned on the afterburners.

Losers? That should rile the home side up.

The hosts are seeing a lot of the ball but they are not making much headway against the powerful French.

A Scottish scrum goes awry and suddenly Alivereti Raka is haring after a long kick deep into home territory. Just as well Stuart Hogg is rapid and can get there before him.

A large collective groan as Stuart Hogg misses touch with a long penalty but Scotland quickly win it back as Greig Laidlaw slows things down in the middle of the pitch to have a think about what's next.

Both sides giving the ball some air and here come Scotland, with Finn Russell in the thick of it. The fly-half then hesitates for a fraction and is smothered by a sea of Frenchmen in white shirts.

Decent response as Sean Maitland wins turnover ball and draws the penalty, which Greig Laidlaw slots over with the minimum of fuss.

A sclaffed clearing kick from France and Scotland have an early line-out. Nice, confident throw from George Turner and the hosts try to build up a head of steam but the big French lads are driving them back.

A huge roar from the 67,000 fans inside the ground as Stuart Hogg launches the ball high into the air.

"We have to deliver a much better performance," said Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend.

"It is obviously a different group of players, but they feel as hurt as the team that went out at the weekend did. So, we will see a better performance, and it has to be a lot better because France are in great shape and they've picked a stronger team this time.

"The physical drive is usually led by the players in the front five and the back row, but it has to be right across the team because France have got a physical back line too. The players know that and know that is what should happen every time they play for Scotland.

"Last week was a reminder to us all that if you don't do that, you are going to come to a big loss - we don't need another reminder."

The teams are out at a sell-out Murrayfield and the pristine pitch is bathed in wonderful Edinburgh sunshine.

National anthems and then we are off.

Greig Laidlaw has been tipping France as possible World Cup contenders but Jacques Brunel's side have been dogged by wild inconsistency. Well, that's not strictly true since Les Bleus have been consistently awful on the road for a long while.

In his column yesterday, BBC Scotland chief sports writer Tom English points out...

"Since the last World Cup they've won only three Tests away from home, two against Italy and one against Argentina. That's the kind of team that Scotland needs to face right now as they try to pick themselves off the floor."
