Brilliant by the French, two good long passes, a great break in the midfield, just absolute textbook French run-in rugby, great to watch. From a Scottish point of view, they were all over the place, lacking numbers out wide and the French took complete control of that.

Finn Russell makes a mess of gathering a simple, high ball and France find a couple of gaping holes in the Scottish defence. Gael Fickou ghosts past Ryan Wilson then feeds Damian Penaud to speed in for his second try.

Thomas Ramos knocks over another easy conversion.

Approving cheers as Felix Lambey is absolutely nailed by Blade Thomson off the back of a French line-out and that leads to a turnover and Scotland have men streaming forward. The crowd are on their feet but referee Wayne Barnes spots a man in blue off his feet when he shouldn't be.

Defensively, apart from conceding the try which was their own mistake, Scotland have been pretty solid which is what we’re looking for. Now they need to build on that. I think Russell’s varying the game pretty well on attack from moving it to put some kicks in, so, apart from the scoreline, it’s been a decent start. Night and day from last week

    Scotland 3-7 France

Damian Penaud celebrates his early score with a big L on his forehead. Lucky? Not at all. He was razor sharp to snaffle up a Scottish error and then turned on the afterburners.

Losers? That should rile the home side up.

A Scottish scrum goes awry and suddenly Alivereti Raka is haring after a long kick deep into home territory. Just as well Stuart Hogg is rapid and can get there before him.

If you hesitate at this level, the speed at which the defensive line is coming up, especially if they’re sneaking that half yard as well, always makes it more difficult. But a good couple of turnovers, good body height, getting under the big, big French guys, that’s where Watson and co can get underneath them. But trying to negate power is the key thing.

A large collective groan as Stuart Hogg misses touch with a long penalty but Scotland quickly win it back as Greig Laidlaw slows things down in the middle of the pitch to have a think about what's next.

Both sides giving the ball some air and here come Scotland, with Finn Russell in the thick of it. The fly-half then hesitates for a fraction and is smothered by a sea of Frenchmen in white shirts.

    Oh dear...

  17. Scotland need to deliver right across the team - Townsendpublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 24 August 2019

    Scotland v France (13:10)

"We have to deliver a much better performance," said Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend.

"It is obviously a different group of players, but they feel as hurt as the team that went out at the weekend did. So, we will see a better performance, and it has to be a lot better because France are in great shape and they've picked a stronger team this time.

"The physical drive is usually led by the players in the front five and the back row, but it has to be right across the team because France have got a physical back line too. The players know that and know that is what should happen every time they play for Scotland.

"Last week was a reminder to us all that if you don't do that, you are going to come to a big loss - we don't need another reminder."

  19. Can France shake off travel travails?published at 13:02 British Summer Time 24 August 2019

    Scotland v France (13:10)

Greig Laidlaw has been tipping France as possible World Cup contenders but Jacques Brunel's side have been dogged by wild inconsistency. Well, that's not strictly true since Les Bleus have been consistently awful on the road for a long while.

In his column yesterday, BBC Scotland chief sports writer Tom English points out...

"Since the last World Cup they've won only three Tests away from home, two against Italy and one against Argentina. That's the kind of team that Scotland needs to face right now as they try to pick themselves off the floor."
