  3. 'That's the best we've played'published at 19:33 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2019

    FT: Toulon 17-28 Edinburgh

Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill speaking on BT Sport: "We came with a plan, we had to stick to the plan. We controlled the game in that second half and it's probably the best we've played.

"There's a huge amount of pride in what we've done today. We've put ourselves in a great position to qualify. Our fans are chanting our name and this is a club that's building slowly.

"We haven’t qualified yet, I want to win next week, I want a home quarter-final. We want to get the satisfaction of winning the group."

Edinburgh beat Toulon in France. In no way is this a surprise - and that says a lot about what Richard Cockerill is creating. Fantastic.

  5. Pool 5 - How things standpublished at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2019

    FT: Toulon 17-28 Edinburgh

Edinburgh move back to the top of Pool 5 courtesy of their third ever Champions Cup victory on French soil.

They sit on 19 points which has been enough to qualify in each of the past five seasons. However, nothing is guaranteed yet and we'll know more after tomorrow's fixtures.

Victory over Vern Cotter's Montpellier at Murrayfield on Friday will confirm their progression and seal top spot, and a losing bonus point could well be enough to progress as runners-up.

In summary - nearly there. Nearly.

  6. Edinburgh make historypublished at 19:22 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2019

    FT: Toulon 17-28 Edinburgh

Edinburgh become the first Scottish side to win at the Stade Mayol and only the third side ever in European competition to do so.

They were excellent value for their win. They have played better this season but had to negotiate a tough opening period when they fell behind after just 85 seconds.

Their response to Guilhem Guirado's try was superb, Darcy Graham scoring brilliantly. Facundo Isa crossed to re-establish the home side's lead, but once Blair Kinghorn scored early in the second half Richard Cockerill's side always looked in control.

James Johnstone's brilliant try sealed the win, with Julian Savea's try too little too late for Toulon.

    Toulon 17-28 Edinburgh

Referee Wayne Barnes blows his whistle and that will be that.

    A famous win for Edinburgh.

  8. Mata the manpublished at 78 mins

    Toulon 17-28 Edinburgh

Bill Mata has been awarded the man of the match award and it's hard to argue with that. The big number eight has been at his majestic best.

Jaco van der Walt, Darcy Graham and James Johnstone deserve to be in the conversation too as they have been excellent.

  9. Nearly there....published at 76 mins

    Toulon 17-28 Edinburgh

That Savea try has just checked Edinburgh's momentum a little and thoughts of a bonus point have now made may for the more pragmatic aim of holding on to what they've got.

They're managing the game well, keeping possession and sucking the life out of this game.

  10. try

Try! Toulon 17-28 Edinburghpublished at 72 mins

    Julian Savea

Still work to do for Edinburgh here.

Mathieu Bastareaud blasts through several tackles and Stephane Onambele Mbarga carries hard into the Edinburgh 22.

When the ball comes wide, Anthony Belleau whips the ball out to Julian Savea and the All Blacks wing goes over in the corner.

Belleau misses the conversion so Edinburgh still lead by 11.

  11. Edinburgh hunting maximum pointspublished at 68 mins

    Toulon 12-28 Edinburgh

You probably wouldn't have predicted this but Edinburgh are hunting a bonus-point clinching fourth try here.

They are well on top, Bill Mata is running riot, and Toulon look broken.

Jaco van der Walt, playing arguably his best game in an Edinburgh shirt, breaks through again but his inside pass just fails to find his support runners with the try-line beckoning.

  12. try

    James Johnstone

Bill Mata, that is absolutely obscene!

The big Fijian collects the ball midway inside his own half and embarks on a ridiculous run, leaving defenders behind for fun.

When he's finally hauled in, he pops the most ludicrous offload to the on-rushing James Johnstone and the wee centre streaks away to go in under the sticks.

Jaco van der Walt adds the extras and Edinburgh are well on their way to a famous win.

  13. Penalty: Toulon 12-21 Edinburghpublished at 62 mins

    Jaco van der Walt

Edinburgh keep the scoreboard ticking over with a straightforward kick from Jaco van der Walt.

What do Toulon have left to offer?

  14. WHAMMO!published at 61 mins

    Toulon 12-18 Edinburgh

Henry Pyrgos owes Grant Gilchrist an enormous apology.

The number nine throws a long, looping pass towards Gilchrist, allowing Mathieu Bastareaud plenty of time to line-up the Scotland lock and absolutely demolish him in the tackle.

'Hospital pass' barely does that justice.

  15. Graham goes closepublished at 58 mins

    Toulon 12-18 Edinburgh

Edinburgh almost get the score that would take them within touching distance of victory.

Brilliant hands from James Johnstone and Blair Kinghorn sets Darcy Graham free.

He races towards the line with Henry Pyrgos in support. If he can find the scrum-half it's a certain score but the winger delays the pass a split-second too long and Pyrgos is unable to gather.

Edinburgh on top here. Can they make it count?

  16. Sterling workpublished at 55 mins

    Toulon 12-18 Edinburgh

A brilliant, frantic passage of play there.

Darcy Graham takes down a rampaging Mathieu Bastareaud, Bill Mata makes a brilliant turnover and Chris Dean puts in a lovely kick to the corner to pin Toulon back near their own line.

  17. Van der Walt waltzes throughpublished at 50 mins

    Toulon 12-18 Edinburgh

Jaco van der Walt seems to have nailed down the Edinburgh number 10 shirt ahead od Simon Hickey and he's playing with great zip to his play here.

He crashes through the tackles of Guilhem Guirado and Emerick Setian to break free from the Edinburgh 22. He fires a great pass on the run to Chris Dean who looks to chip through for Duhan ver der Merwe. If the ball stays in play the big man is away. Alas it trickles over the touchline.

  18. Penalty: Toulon 12-18 Edinburghpublished at 48 mins

    Jaco van der Walt

The Edinburgh scrum puts the squeeze on, win the penalty and Jaco van der Walt does the business from the tee to give the Scottish side a six-point lead.

  19. Edinburgh turning the screwpublished at 47 mins

    Toulon 12-15 Edinburgh

Blair Kinghorn launches a booming kick deep into Toulon territory, the ball holding up just before the try-line.

Fly-half Anthony Belleau looks to run it back but Kinghorn is flying up to apply some pressure, Belleau throws the pass forward and Edinburgh have an attacking scrum in a prime position.

    Big moments these.

  20. try

We said the next try would be crucial and Edinburgh have got it.

James Johnstone collects the ball and is immediately under pressure. The centre puts through a gorgeous little grubber kick which is perfectly weighted for Blair Kinghorn to run on to and score.

Jaco Van Der Walt nails the conversion and the visitors are back in front.
