Great strike from Yu Tamura. The captain showed faith in him and it takes the lead back to 13 points to settle the nerves.

  2. Penalty - Japan 23-10 Russiapublished at 64 mins

    Yu Tamura

Michael Leitch shows considerable faith in the right peg of Yu Tamura, backing his fly-half to slot from 40-odd metres and a bit of angle.

No easy kick this. But Tamura drills through the middle to restore the hosts' 13-point lead.

    Japan 20-10 Russia

Japan have brought on scrum-half Fumiaki Tanaka for Yutaka Nagare and lock Luke Thompson for Wimpie van der Walt.

  4. Penalty - Japan 20-10 Russiapublished at 61 mins

    Yury Kushnarev

Russia fly-half Yury Kushnarev steps up and slaps over the penalty. His side are 10 points adrift. A quarter of the match to go.

    Definitely do-able.

    Japan 20-7 Russia

Japan's tackling is knocking Russia back in midfield.

Time for a change of tack.

Yury Kushnarev hoists the up and under. And it works!

Vasily Artemyev claims the high ball and Japan are offside as they smother the former Northampton Saint.

Penalty right in front and Russia are going to take the money.

I am going around 70% of the crowd are wearing red shirts in the stadium. It's a real sight to see colour like this sweeping around the stadium.

    Kirill Golosnitskiy is a handful.

He fielded the ball and got away but Tagir Gadzhiev, who has been everywhere, goes in off his feet.

Russia flanker Tagir Gadzhiev attempts to worm his way over from five metres out, but he has got isolated from his team-mates, who are struggling to suck in the oxygen and keep up.

    Penalty Japan to relieved cheers.

Russia are trying to muscle their way back into this match with some close-quarters trucking up around the fringe.

They are five short of the Japanese line.

The home crowd are demanding more from the red-and-white defence.

    Japan 20-7 Russia

The ice has been broken on this party.

After a stilted first half, Japan look a lot more loose and limber in the second.

Michael Leitch secured a turnover as he limpets over tackled number eight Nikita Vavilin and the backs flick the ball wide.

More sleight of hand than Fagin's gang. But Lomano Lemeki between-the-legs pass drifts forward...

    Shame.

    Japan 20-7 Russia

    Matt Dawson
England World Cup winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

It will be a party now in Japan. Russia do not have the fitness to play this top level rugby as it was a second-row who got nearest to Pieter Labuschagne as he ran away to score the try.

    Japan 20-7 Russia

Pieter Labuschagne went into the hit and ripped the ball free. Then he just put his foot down and left the Russian defenders in his wake.

The big man has the gas to convert the breakaway...

Flanker Pieter Labuschagne rips the ball out of the grasp of Andrey Ostrikov as the Russian second row comes in too upright and casual.

    Like candy from a baby.

Labuschagne stokes the furnace and had enough fuel to burn off the off-balance Russia defence and go in from 50m out.

  17. Penalty - Japan 15-7 Russiapublished at 44 mins

    Yu Tamura

    Over it goes.

Japan move more than a converted score clear. I reckon they will be looking up the road rather than in the rear view mirror though.

Two more tries and the bonus point could be crucial in the Pool A shakedown.

Japan are awarded a penalty as Russia centre Dimitry Gerasimov lays over the ball, slowing up the recycling.

Yes, they will and it is bang in front.

    Japan 12-7 Russia

Japan are swarming all over Russia like killer bees.

A desperate chase back from the visitors as the ball is chipped in behind.

Japan are playing with more urgency and accuracy already, taking up the chance of a quick line-out and stretching the Russian defence as thin as cordial at a toddler's party.
