If you are a Japanese coach you would just be urging your players to go through the phases.
You would expect Russia to be out on their feet in the final 10/15 minutes but they aren't playing in the right areas.
Japan 5-7 Russia
Russia are giving as good, if not better, than they are getting. They are good value for their lead and the hosts party is in danger of falling flat.
Expectations were not high for Russia coming into the tournament after their defeat to Championship side Jersey in the build up.
They have been good.

Top two inches in the fridge? Either very good or very bad. School is about to have lunch, so I can sneakily keep up whilst in the playground.

That is the sort of scrappy play that would have earned an Eddie Jones hairdryer during his time in charge of Japan.
The ball is left unattended at the back of the ruck and Russia number eight Nikita Vavilin is the cat burgler, sneaking through and streaking upfield.
Centre Vladimir Ostroushko carries on the momentum and that is a 60m loss for the hosts...

Captain Michael Leitch finds himself in the blind channels and he has all the skills. He is a pivotal player for Japan and he can bring so much.

The crowd really thought that was a try.
A heartbreaking "ahhhhhhhoooooo" noise rang out as their excitement turned to disappointment.
Japan 5-7 Russia
The crowd think that their team are over for a try as Shota Horie rumbles across the whitewash.
Squeals of delight around the stadium though have obscured Nigel Owens' whistle.
A pass went forward in the build-up.

Get that man a matador cape.
Japan fly-half Yu Tamura sends chasing Russia centre Dimitry Gerasimov for a hotdog with a nimble sidestep before piroutteing though Vitaly Zhivatov's attempt to nail him.
The hosts have got a live one at 10.

That was not too convincing by Japan wing Kotaro Matsushima. He claims a kick into his own 22m, but stumbles into touch as he does so.
Russia line-out 15m out. Opposition scouts - such as Ireland and Scotland - might want to expose their back three to further aerial examination.
Japan 5-7 Russia
Russia wing German Davydov can't quite latch onto a loose ball out wide. He is a bit of a sevens star. Every time I hear his name though I am reminded of the old-man aftershave of the same name.
Japan 5-7 Russia
Russia, you may not be surprised to find out, have some big old units up front. Second rows Bogdan Fedotko and Andrey Ostrikov, late of Sale, have a little pick and go around the fringes attempting to make their size advantage count.

That was LOUD.
Suddenly there are Japan flags everywhere. Unfazed by Russia's try, the home support has been cheering their team on non-stop and now they've been rewarded.

It was a bit of magic from the centre that we will see for the rest of the tournament.
Japan have to be patient here because Russia's defence are all over the show. They will stroll in four or five tries with a bit of patience.

Japan come the full width of the field from left to right. It's a no look offload by Timothy Lafaele straight into the bread basket as he goes to the ground.
Kotaro Matsushima
What is Japanese for 'jouez'?
That is a champagne/sake cocktail of delicious rugby as Timothy Lafaele flips the ball out the back of his hand with his nose about two inches from the floor.
William Tupou nabs it and basketball-style passes out to the unmarked Kotaro Matsushima, who motors into the corner.
The conversion misses to the left of the sticks.
Japan 0-7 Russia
Japan have recovered well from that gut-punch of an start. A couple of probing kicks in behind from fly-half Yu Tamura ask questions of the Russia wings, making them spin and chase back towards their own line.
The hosts have a line-out, 10 metres out from the Russian line...

It was an up and under by Russia but the Japanese full-back backed away and did not get near the ball. It's a shocker.
Kirill Golosnitskiy (con Kushnarev)
Well, well, well.
This is the sort of thing that usually requires a ceremonial apology in the Japanese corporate world.
Japan full-back William Tupou gets himself in a terrible mix as he tries to gather a routine up and under from Vasily Artemyev.
He barely lays a finger on it and the ball bounces up for wing Kirill Golosnitskiy to pounce, bursting through for the opening score of the tournament.
