    England 0-0 Tonga

Tonga are offside in midfield and Paul Williams awards England the penalty.

"Shot?" the ref asks England captain Owen Farrell, like the over-eager mate at the bar.

Farrell nods and is surely taking a treble here...

  2. 'Inexperience and frailties in Tongan defence'published at 11:26 British Summer Time 22 September 2019

    Matt Dawson
England World Cup winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

I've been really impressed by Tonga strategically and how they've tried to play against England but you can just see in defence there's a bit of inexperience and a few frailties.

    England 0-0 Tonga

A little knot of Saracens get the line-out drive going forward, Jamie George and Maro Itoje are at the heart of it.

And then Ben Youngs darts blind! Jonny May in support, and Sam Underhill offers inside for the wing.

Big yardage gain. But Owen Farrell's crossfield kick is claimed, just, by Viliami Lolohea under huge pressure from Anthony Watson.

    England 0-0 Tonga

England are denying Tonga the one-on-one physical tests that they might relish.

Owen Farrell plays percentages instead, stabbing a kick deep into the red half for some territory at the cost of possession.

The first proper bout of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot begins and there is the smallest of Tongan contingents trying to oppose it with a chant of 'Tonga'.

    England 0-0 Tonga

Tonga hooker Sosefo Sakalia goes for the long-range dart, chucking it past the usual targets, out the pub window, over the top and picking out a runner out the back.

    Innovative.

But Tonga have been kept off the floor in contact. That is not going anywhere. And referee Paul Williams points the penalty England's way.

Owen Farrell is just so competitive - he wants to win every aspect of the game, so he can get frustrated. He's still fairly young for an England captain. He knows he needs to be a calm head on the pitch but you don't want to take that edge away from him.

    Tonga get us going.

Clean take from Billy Vunipola, who opts to sling a pass inside to Owen Farrell to clear, rather than to charge into contact.

Farrell takes us up towards halfway.
