    Pool B

Ireland are top of Pool A, but there are plenty of questions and conundrums for Joe Schmidt to conjure with,

A bonus-point win over Samoa on 12 October in their final game will guarantee their place in the last eight.

They would play either South Africa or New Zealand once there.

They would need a big step in quality to get to their first-ever Rugby World Cup semi-final.

    FT: Russia 35-0 Russia

    • Rob Kearney crossed for a try after just 90 seconds in this match, Ireland’s fastest ever Rugby World Cup try and the fastest of the 2019 Rugby World Cup for any team.
    • Russia made 182 tackles in this match, the second most by any side in a match at the 2019 Rugby World Cup so far (Wales 183 v Australia) and the most Russia have ever made in a RWC match.
    • This was Ireland’s 38th Rugby World Cup game and the first time they have prevented the opposition from scoring; it was the first time Russia have failed to score a point in a RWC match.

Russia coach Lyn Jones: "We are absolutely delighted with our performance, we came here to make it really hard for Ireland to score their four tries and we are so proud of our players, they gave everything. We were organised and our tactics worked well. The players were shattered at the end and that is all you can ask.

"The sign of a good team is attitude in defence and we stood up today and knocked the Irish boys back. It is a big day for Russian rugby and it was a five-star performance from us".

Ireland have to find something to make them click.

A nine-day turnaround before their next match is pretty good for them. They need to rest and tweak a few things in that time because you can't do that that when you get to the quarter-finals.

That could be selection, how they play or training techniques to drill.

The coaches have a really tough job and need to use all their experience. The senior players also need to get together to discuss things - we used to do it over a beer - and I think those conversations really need to be held in the Irish camp.

  5. 'We were loose with the ball'published at 13:31 British Summer Time 3 October 2019

    FT: Ireland 35-0 Samoa

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt said: "We needed the win to take confidence, we needed the performance to take confidence and we needed the support to take confidence. It was fantastic and it is still rippling around the stadium, it really does lift the players.

"We were maybe a little bit loose with the ball at times in really greasy conditions. Samoa will be tough and I know how humid it is there, so they are a little bit more accustom to these conditions than we are."

Ireland are not the team they were 18 months ago and I don't think they are up to beating New Zealand or South Africa no matter what tactics they employ.

Ireland are perhaps a little bit predictable at times. They play flat to the line all the time and you saw how many times players were overrunning the next phase.

Sometimes they are passive in defence and it's a reason why they have dropped off in results.

Ireland fly-half Johnny Sexton: "We are delighted to get a good win and back on the horse and we got the bonus point which was what we were looking for.

"They are a well organised team and made it difficult for us at times. The ball was very slippy and there is lots to work on but we are onto the next one against Samoa."

I don't think Ireland will win in the quarter-finals but it sharpens the mind when you're playing against the top teams.

I can't see the conditions being quite as bad as they were in Kobe but Ireland have no chance against New Zealand at the moment.

If you put yourselves in the All Blacks' shoes, they will be massively focused after what Ireland did them to them last year.

It was a good game to listen to on the radio, but not to watch on the television. I wouldn't say the Irish players look particularly happy. They know that was not the performance the squad really needed, to give them the momentum after losing to Japan.

    All done.

Ireland have the bonus-point win they came to Kobe for. They leave without the confidence-boosting try-fest evisceration they might have hoped for.

The gong sounds. The clock is red.

The put in is also red to a scrum near halfway. Will Russia run for a consolation score? Or boot out for some well earned rest?

    The former!

You see what a difference it makes when someone comes onto the ball from depth, with pace. Good to see them play with a bit of depth and playing through their opponents.

    Delicious coast-to-coast score.

Jordan Larmour hits the accelerator, beats one defender and draws another two before flipping the ball out to Keith Earls. Back inside to Larmour and back out to Garry Ringrose to go under the sticks.
