Good take at the line-out by Evan Olmstead and that sets the position for a rare Canada attack. South Africa fly-half Elton Jantjies is penalised for coming off his feet and his opposite number Peter Nelson can stick this one in the corner.

Right then, what can the 14 men of Canada do in the second half?

    South Africa 47-0 Canada

Canada are winless in nine Rugby World Cup matches (D1, L8), their worst ever run in the competition’s history.

Their eight defeats in that period have come by an average margin of 34 points.

It looks like that run is going to continue today, and the average defeat might just slide a bit too..

Ben Wire: More than a point a minute. Shocking

Bastian Sdander: There's no malice in it, but it's reckless and dangerous from Larsen. It's certainly not easy to accept, but you can't shoulder-charge a guy like that. I love how most players will quietly accept their punishment and walk off - not like in football.

Cobus Reinach comes from a great gene pool - his father was 400m champion and right wing for the Springboks.

    Seven tries, one red card.

An action-packed first half, although one to forget for Canada.

    Frans Steyn (con Elton Jantjies)

An absolute gift for Frans Steyn.

Canada tap and go close to their own line and as Phil Mack looks to fling the ball out wide he hangs it up for the Springbok centre to intercept.

Steyn trots in from about two metres out to add to the Canadian misery.

Scrum-half Mack has his head in his hands.

Elton Jantjies kicks the conversion to make it 47 unanswered points in the first half for South Africa.

South Africa turn the ball over in midfield and hooker Schalk Brits turns scrum-half for a moment to spin it out to his backs.

Canada scramble well to stop the Springboks scampering in down the left.

The crowd are desperately trying to get behind Canada to try to give them some support to drive them on.

The refereeing was outstanding. They were looking for an opportunity to give a yellow card to keep the game flowing but there wasn't any reason because Larsen came in high.

    South Africa 40-0 Canada

Josh Larsen is sent-off for an illegal shoulder charge that connected with the neck of a South African player.

Canada will have to play the rest of this match with 14 men.

And now Canada's Josh Larsen is in trouble for an illegal charge at the ruck. The TMO is looking at this one. He's heading for a breather, it's just whether it's for 10 minutes or the rest of the match...

A meaty shove from the red and whites.

They're held up just short of the line and Phil Mack looks for the cross-field punt again - but the scrum-half's kick is charged down.

  14. Canada go close!published at 35 mins

    South Africa 40-0 Canada

Canada almost cross in the corner.

South Africa-born DTH Van Der Merwe leaps high into the Kobe sky to try and reach a cross-field kick, but it's taken away from him by the fingertips of Springbok full-back Damian Willemse.

It ricochets into the in-goal area and S'busiso Nkosi grounds over his own try line. A Canadian scrum five metres out...

Best moment of the match for Canada so far as Jeff Hassler goes whizzing down the wing following a neat step by Phil Mack.

That's got the Kobe crowd going.

Canada would do well to get to half-time without conceding again. But they must be out on their feet, they're just not enjoying any of the ball at all - it's tackle after tackle after tackle for the minnows.

    Warrick Gelant (con Elton Jantjies)

    Relentless.

Cobus Reinach picks and goes from the scrum down the right-hand side.

The Springboks keep it moving all the way to Warrick Gelant on the flank and the fleet-footed winger weaves beyond a couple of would-be tacklers before powering towards the line and using his momentum to dot down over the whitewash.

A sixth try for South Africa inside half an hour.

Elton Jantjies nails the extras from the touchline.

    It's a hat-trick for Cobus Reinach!

South Africa are slicing through this Canada defensive line at will.

The Springboks move it freely at pace, chucking offloads Harlem Globetrotters-style, before finding Reinach with space to gallop into.

There's no stopping the speedy scrum-half from there...

Elton Jantjies adds the extras from in front of the sticks.

    Cobus Reinach (con Elton Jantjies)

South Africa secure the bonus point inside 20 minutes.

Damian Willemse, who only arrived in the country earlier this week, looks to weave his way through but loses his footing 35 metres out.

South Africa keep it alive and RG Snyman smashes a hole in the Canada line, drawing in defenders and refusing to go down.

And there's the scrum-half again, Cobus Reinach right on hand to pick up from the ruck and dive over.
