Matt Fagerson is the latest Warrior to fall foul of Mike Adamson's officiating of the breakdown and Jaco van der Walt punishes him by kicking Edinburgh into the lead.

  3. Glasgow the home side?published at 2 mins

    Glasgow 0-0 Edinburgh

It's a little odd seeing Edinburgh in their all-white change kit when playing at Murrayfield, but this is Glasgow's designated home match.

Messy opening couple of minutes, Nic Groom's box-kick half charged down and the ball spilling out a couple of hands.

Glasgow are then penalised at the breakdown, and we could see many penalties in that area of the game with the new stricter implementation of the rules around the breakdown.

They've not played any rugby for nearly six months. There's going to be a lot of errors, which I think will make for an intriguing game of rugby.

  7. "We're going to throw everything at it"published at 17:06 British Summer Time 22 August 2020

    Glasgow v Edinburgh (KO 1715)

It's shaping up to be an exciting season finale for Edinburgh and head coach Richard Cockerill wants his players to seize the opportunity in front of them.

"We have worked ever so hard to put ourselves in a position to contest at least the play-offs and give ourselves a tilt at being champions," Cockerill said.

“I'm not going to underplay it. We've got to this point so why would you give it away easily now. We're going to go as hard as we can over the next two weeks.

"If we get to a semi-final which is hopefully likely, then we can throw everything at it. If we're the least favoured (of the last four) then great. It will suit us."

  8. SRU given green light to welcome fans backpublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 22 August 2020

    Glasgow v Edinburgh (KO 1715)

This evening's match will be played behind closed doors but Scottish Rugby has been given permission by the Scottish government to allow a limited number of fans to attend Friday's return match between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Around 700 fans will be allowed into Murrayfield, with playing squads, coaches, medical, security and operations staff bringing the total number in the stadium to around 1000 people.

It will be the first major sporting event in Scotland, and the first rugby match in the UK, to have fans back in the stadium since the coronavirus lockdown.

  9. He Huw darespublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 22 August 2020

    Glasgow v Edinburgh (KO 1715)

The selection that has set the most tongues wagging this week is Danny Wilson's decision to start Huw Jones at full-back.

The Scotland centre does have some experience in the position going back to his days in South Africa with Stormers, but since moving to Scotland in 2017 he has been deployed exclusively in the midfield.

"It's a little bit of needs must, but we feel Huw ticks a lot of the boxes of a full-back," Wilson said.

"With these things there's always a slight gamble attached to it, but I'm really confident in his attitude to it. I know Edinburgh will test that, but you've got to go for these things."

  10. 'This should be fun'published at 16:55 British Summer Time 22 August 2020

    Glasgow v Edinburgh (KO 1715)

It's back, thank goodness. Rugby, but not as we know it. This might be a surreal occasion but it's a hugely significant game for Edinburgh, in particular. If Edinburgh win and Munster lose in Dublin later tonight then Richard Cockerill's team are guaranteed to top the table and will have a home semi-final.

There are fascinating story lines all over the place. Huw Jones at 15. Not many people saw that one coming. In his first game in charge of the Warriors, Danny Wilson has pulled off a bit of a surprise there. Rory Sutherland versus Zander Fagerson, Stuart McInally versus Fraser Brown, the return of Richie Gray and the battle of the back-rows.

The clarified breakdown laws favour the groundhogs and Edinburgh look to have more of those natural jackals than Glasgow. We might have a penalty fest as players adapt. The laws are designed to make the breakdown a safer environment. The idea is that there won't be as many players off the feet which in turn will see more players available to carry. It's supposed to make the contest more dynamic. We'll see. There will be teething problems here, inevitably.

What joy to have the game back, though. This should be fun.

  12. New coach in the Warriors boxpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 22 August 2020

    Glasgow v Edinburgh (KO 1715)

It's a first match for Danny Wilson as Glasgow Warriors head coach after replacing Dave Rennie, who departed to take charge of Australia.

It's hard to gauge what shape Wilson's team is in at the start of his reign. Let's not forget, this is a team that reached the Pro14 final last season and the last eight of the Champions Cup.

But there is no doubt this season has been a disappointment. Failure to get out of their pool in Europe and near-certain failure to reach the Pro14 semi-finals represents, well, failure.

Can the new man bring the necessary spark to get Glasgow back to their best?

  13. Back to businesspublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 22 August 2020

    Glasgow v Edinburgh (KO 1715)

The long wait is over. After a five-month hiatus, the Pro14 is back and we are back with a cracker this evening.

The 1872 Cup series stands at 1-1 this season and whoever claims the derby spoils tonight will claim the cup.

Glasgow's hopes of making the Pro14 semi-finals rely on a highly unlikely run of results falling their way. It's a different matter for Edinburgh, however, who require just a single point from these back-to-back derby matches to secure a last-four berth.

Leading Conference B, Richard Cockerill's side will be looking to secure a home semi-final.
