England secure top spot in Group A of the Autumn Nations Cup with an ultimately comfortable victory over a much-improved Wales.

The home side battled gamely, particularly in defence, and they confounded expectations to take an early lead.

But Wayne Pivac's men were still blunt in attack, shaky at set-pieces and eventually succumbed to England's power.

Eddie Jones and his England players can now look forward to next weekend's match for the Autumn Nations Cup title - most probably against France - while Wales will have to make do with a likely encounter with Italy.

Man of the match Sam Underhill told BBC Radio 5 Live:

"We were expecting a proper challenge down here and it was.

"We can be pretty happy with our performance. Wales are still a quality team. They have got good ball carriers and serious pace on the outside.

"I wouldn't say it [the style] is boring. If you don't like scrums and line-outs, go and watch rugby league.

"The quality of the set-piece now compared to 10 years ago is difference. The quality of rugby in general is going up and the more that goes up, the smaller the margin for error."

From an international rugby perspective, they are playing weekend to weekend which they are used to.

This England side are benefitting from the five years since Eddie Jones came into this set-up. It was all about taking England to a completely different level of fitness.

Now they are starting to reap their rewards. There seems to be enough of a difference between England's overall fitness and their opposition's.

England tried to play a little bit more today but still the boot and forwards dominated.

Wales came and did what they will always do against England - fight and scrap for everything. But England had too much power and precision.

"We stuck at it. That was a very similar situation to the Principality Stadium in the Six Nations. We were ahead in the first half.

"It was a great piece of learning that they learned how to handle that bit of pressure and in the end won convincingly.

"It is great to have fans back next weekend and hopefully it is a sign of things to come."

England head coach Eddie Jones told BBC Radio 5 Live:

"Wales are historically hard to beat at home.

"We got a lot of quick ball early. We weren't as precise as we would have liked to be out wide. We are showing signs of where we want to go.

"It is the way rugby is at the moment. The size of the pitch hasn't changed. You have 15 players now who are all athletically superior to what they were 12 months ago so space is hard to find.

"Sometimes you want to go round, sometimes you want to go through and sometimes over the top. At the moment over the top is the way to do it."

Wales head coach Wayne Pivac told S4C's Clwb Rygbi: "A lot of young guys got an opportunity against a strong England side and did well.

"We're making improvements.

"Ultimately, scrum penalties went against us and that's something we'll have to look at.

"The refereeing too, the scrums were a bit of a penalty and the Dan Biggar decision [tackle in the air leading to England's first try].

"We need to build from this performance. It was a good effort from the guys and we're heading in the right direction."

The weather was fine, the pitch was great and there were five offloads in the game.

That is woeful for two sides with bag-loads of talent. When you are winning, you're winning.

But there will come a time when some of these players will eventually start to bite back a bit and play a different style of rugby.

England were expected to win and they have got the job done this evening, securing top spot in the Autumn Nations Cup's Pool A.

Eddie Jones' side will face France in the final if Les Blues can avoid defeat against Italy tonight.

If France do lose, it will be Scotland in the final for England.

England captain Owen Farrell talking to Amazon: "It is massive. We knew it would be a tough game.

"We struggled to get a foothold and momentum until the end so I think it was a good performance.

"Wales are a tough, tough side and they showed that. We will look at this and see how we can get better.

"At the same time we came down here to get a result and we have done that."

It is not easy for any team to get themselves motivated week to week without the crowd.

Then to go behind... The senior players from this England side did step up.

They will be celebrating properly tonight because they beat a Welsh side that really came at them and showed they would cause trouble if it got loose.

Wales scrum-half Lloyd Williams told S4C's Clwb Rygbi: "The boys are disappointed but that was certainly an improvement.

"We knew how hard a task this would be.

"We gave it everything and defended hard, but it wasn't enough.

"It's important we improve and work on our game for next weekend."

It was a far more encouraging performance from Wales, particularly defensively.

The set-piece struggled. If Wales can sort that out and keep possession going forward, they will be going in the right direction.

England are going to be chuffed to bits with this result.

Wales applied so much pressure and England have got themselves out of it well.

Wales enter the 80th minute in their own 22, trying gamely to play their way out of trouble.

They manage that much, Louis Rees-Zammit moving through the gears and then kicking clear.

But it doesn't lead to anything. England's Henry Slade has had enough and kicks the ball out to bring the game to a close.

An improvement from Wales, who were competitive at least, but England were comfortable winners.

Eddie Jones' men will now wait to discover who they'll face next weekend for the Autumn Nations Cup title.

England flanker Sam Underhill is named the official man of the match.

You can see why. He's been prominent in the loose, industrious in defence and a typical menace at the breakdown.

Nice for him to do it at Parc y Scarlets too.

Bath's Underhill used to play for Welsh side the Ospreys, and this is the home ground of their biggest rivals, the Scarlets.

Owen Farrell had looked to have got his goal-kicking back in working order but he pulls a penalty wide to the left.

Meanwhile, scrum-half Ben Youngs is replaced by Dan Robson.

Prop Ellis Genge is congratulated by his England team-mates after he helps beat a Welsh scrum to a pulp.
