More from Jones on the red card that put England down to 14 men: "We still played how we wanted to play. We were just restricted in attack because we had one player less.

    "When you're against a red-hot team it's difficult.

"We all agree that the safety of the players is paramount. We all agree with the laws of the game. It's just something you've got to adapt and respond to.

"We'll be right. We don't have a shortage of spirit. We'll get ourselves right and rip into france.

"You've got to set-piece well against them. The way they attack gives you opportunities to attack against them."

  3. 'Our inexperience and exuberance cost us' - Jonespublished at 19:38 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2022

    FT: England 15-32 Ireland

England head coach Eddie Jones told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I thought we were on top with 14 men. Three of our starting forwards were lost through injury and a red card.

"I thought we were in a position to win the game. Our inexperience and exuberance is fantastic for the team but it cost us a bit at the end and that's a learning experience.

"We opened the field up for them. The back-to-back pressure told, particularly when you're defending with 14 men.

"It's just experience, knowing what to do at the right time. All young players go through that. That's a great learning experience for them."

  4. How it standspublished at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2022

    So.

Ireland can now claim the title if they draw against Scotland next Saturday and France lose to England.

If Ireland beat Scotland and France lose to England or draw without a bonus point, Ireland take the title.

If Ireland beat Scotland with a bonus point, France must win to take the title (and the Grand Slam of course).

There is also a bit of a wild scenario where Ireland could lose to Scotland but claim both a four-try bonus point and a losing bonus point (for losing by seven points or fewer), Then, they would need France lose to England or draw without a bonus point to give them a chance at taking the title on points difference.

England will be hoping to avoid a second successive fifth-placed finish.

After the red card, it was very much needed within that squad to stand under the posts and have to look each other in the eye and think 'we thought we had it tough enough this week'.

Who are the voices? Who are the decision makers? What are we going to do?

That is what makes me so much more positive than the scoreboard. There is so much positivity to take out of it.

I really hope the week goes in the right direction for England and they turn up in Paris with a different mindset.

You get very little credit sometimes for beating a 14-man side.

For Ireland, the discipline was poor. The scrum was a major area of concern.

But they were able to make the right decisions.

Hooker Jamie George has told England Rugby about his pride in how England played:

"Right up to that last try I genuinely had belief and I think that says a huge amount about the character we have in the squad.

"This sounds ridiculous but it's one of the proudest days I've had in an England shirt. I feel quite emotional from this game and the feedback we had from the crowd,

"To play like that with 14 men for 78 minutes against an Ireland team respected as one of the best in the world takes some doing and I'm proud to be part of the group."

England have been together maybe eight weeks. They should be doing nothing this week before the France game.

They could turn up next week and be absoltuely flying, ready to go.

I want to see some consistency in selection. Injuries might curtail that. I would love head coach Eddie Jones to look at that performance and think those boys did that themselves and see if they can have the week completely to themselves.

That would give them an enormous lift going into the next year.

Player of the match Jamison Gibson-Park told ITV his main emotion was relief at full-time.

"We knew it was going to be a massive challenge coming here - it's one of the toughest in world rugby.

"As we expected they put up a massive fight and kudos to them. Teams tend to lift a little when they get down to 14 men. They stuck at it but thankfully we came out with the points.

"Staying calm was the main thing. We managed to and came away with the win so we're delighted. We'll see how it pans out next week."

  12. 'Devastating' - Stewardpublished at 19:07 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2022

    FT: England 15-32 Ireland

England full-back Freddie Steward said of the red card on BBC Radio 5 Live: "You come into a game and you never expect that to happen.

"The boys responded really well. It would have been easy for heads to drop.

"It shows the spirit of this team. The boys dug in and gave it everything.

"When something like that happens you have to think of a new plan. We did that really well. Unfortunately it wasn't enough.

"We sat in at half-time and had a genuine belief that we can go and win the game. Unfortunately we ran out of steam at the end

"This team is one that is not going to give up. We'll review the game and we'll attack the France game as we would any other. It's a really exciting prospoect to go to that atmosphere and put on a show.

Asked how he feels that the title is now out of England's reach, Steward said: "It's devastating. The Six Nations is always a tournament we want to win and that's not going to be possible."

Before this we said a lot of questions around England would have been answered today.

Given the red card, I'm not sure they have been. It's England's heaviest defeat at Twickenham since 2015.

Can England live with France in Paris? That is the new big question that will get answered next Saturday.

Nobody should be critical of either side today. That was a fantastic Test match.

How both sides responded to the red card made for a terrific Test match.

England worried a really good Ireland side for 85% of the time.

From an England perspective, I was incredibly proud of the way that squad responded to tough circumstances.

England captain Courtney Lawes told ITV: "We showed today how much it means to be part of this team. We didn't give up for a second.

"We knew it was going to be tough from minute two. We were pretty tired towards the end. Class effort from the boys. I couldn't ask for anything more from them.

"We were excited for the challenge. As soon as the red card went up the energy went up.

"We wanted to make it right for Ewels. We couldn't do that but the effort was there and that's all we could ask for.

"Props to Genge and Sinckler. They did an unbelievable job today. We've got a great pack. We wanted to bully them up front and for the vast majority of the game we did that."

This is a part of England's characteristic that I think has been missing: how they change the way they need to play before they get to half-time or in between games.

They are not good at it but today their hand was forced. They had to do something completely different than they did in training.

That was the moment for senior players to stand up and do the things they hadn't necessarily practised.

They did it and it will stand them in good stead. The players will sit at home and reflect that they need to be like that more often.

That bonus-point win leaves Ireland two points short of France's total of 18 in the table.

France will win the Grand Slam if they beat England in Paris next weekend.

If Ireland beat Scotland earlier on that Saturday, they would need England to beat France to take the title. Clear your diary, that is going to be a good day.

I feel a bit for Charlie Ewels. There was no doubt it was a red card because his tackle was too high, clumsy and put his team in a lot of bother.

However, England go to France next week with the chance to take a big scalp that will set them right on their journey for a year or so. It will be a tough week for them but I hope they throw everything at France.
