England try scorer Marcus Smith speaking to Sky Sports: "That was special. We were dreaming about this four weeks ago, it didn’t go to plan in the first game, we had a long hard look at ourselves, looked at our games individually. It is a young group, the senior boys led it and told us to believe.

"I’ve come through with a few of these guys through the age groups and to represent England in full colours is special, let alone in Australia and to do it at a venue like this is a bonus.

[On scoring his try] "I saw the bounce of the ball, picked my knees up and went as far as I could. I thought I’d get caught, and thank goodness I went over."

Patrick Burke: Great to see Northern Hemisphere rugby victories. Ireland win series in New Zealand and England win series in Australia.

  4. 'We want to be at our best at the World Cup'published at 13:30 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    FT: Australia 17-21 England

England head coach Eddie Jones speaking to Sky Sports: "The big difference between the first and third tests were that we were not at our best but we kept fighting, kept in the game and our tackling particularly at the end got us a result.

"We stuck at it, it was a different game for us, the conditions were not fantastic for rugby and we had to adapt to that. We adapted as well as we could, we did not have the benefit of a training run. We were a little bit off, but we kept fighting. A great effort by the leaders – Courtney, Genge, Owen and Jack, and our finishers were outstanding.

"It is a really positive step, we always felt the team was going in the right direction, sometimes results don’t reflect that. At the end we had six players with under 10 caps – this is a young inexperienced squad and to have an experience like this is fantastic. They understand what it is like to win a series away.

"Some of our guys have now won two series in Australia. I am so proud of their efforts.

"It is like training a race horse, we don’t want to be at our best until the World Cup finals, we need to keep building the base, the depth, the competition and our style of play. We are in a good position."

    FT: Australia 17-21 England

England captain Courtney Lawes speaking to Sky Sports: "It really shows what it means for us to play this team. We had a tough start to this series but have showed what we are made of.

"We didn't come out how we wanted to today. The message at half-time was to stick together. We knew what we wanted to do. We showed what it means to play for this team. We did what we wanted to do to improve week on week. It's a proud moment for sure.

"We've still got a lot to learn. We can win a game like this where you don't really fire a shot and you take your chances when you can. We did a lot of defending."

England captain Courtney Lawes speaking on BBC Radio 5 live: "We dug in, fair play to Australia with the casualties they have had, they did a great job and put us to the test but we stuck together and stuck at it.

"We fought for each other, we had a great four weeks here and enjoyed it. They gave us a bit of fuel in the press, we stuck to out guns, we found a way to win"

Signed sealed and very much delivered, well done boys

England have demonstrated their strengths and weaknesses in these tests, but most importantly have shown resilience to deliver when it matters. Now they need to work to address the areas of weakness in readiness for the world Cup - if we do this I personally have faith that we can get to the final
