    France 40-5 Ireland

Not an afternoon to remember for Ireland in Toulouse, where they really were well beaten by their hosts.

The message from the pundits seems to be a consistent one - Ireland need to improve their discipline and cut out the unforced errors.

Their minds will turn swiftly to round three next weekend when a home match against Italy awaits - and the chance to get their first win of the campaign after opening with two defeats.

We'll have you covered with extensive coverage next weekend, and also keep your eyes on the BBC Sport website for reaction to this defeat and build-up to that meeting with Italy.

Thanks for joining us. See you next time.

I think Ireland have to take the positives from it. They definitely came out in the second half and showed us more of what they are about. We got to see them with ball in hand more, which was great, and for Eve Higgins' try there was some really enterprising rugby. So there were improvements, but there is a lot to work on for next week.

It was an improved French performance from last week but if Ireland are honest it was unforced errors that cost them again and their discipline needs to be tightened up. There are things that can be corrected and things that can be improved upon for their next game.

    And there's the final whistle.

A fairly chastening afternoon in Toulouse for Ireland as a thumping 40-5 defeat makes it two losses from their opening two Six Nations matches.

Eve Higgins got their try in what was an improved second-half display but it was a game in which France stamped their authority from the outset and never let the visitors into the game.

Llorens, Sansus (2), Forlani, Joyeux and Boulard, who was shown a late yellow card, were the French try scorers as they built on their opening day victory.

It took far longer than they would have hoped, but Ireland get on the scoresheet through Eve Higgins - and a fine try it was too.

And just as we note Ireland's improvement, France go and score their sixth try of the game.

It was another fine passing move from right to left that fed full-back Emilie Boulard who was never going to miss from close range.

Caroline Drouin adds the extra to put 35 points between the sides.

My old school principal liked the classic trick of highlighting the second half score when our rugby team suffered the (very) odd defeat but did better after the interval.

Ireland may not be leading the second half, but it is certainly a lot more encouraging so far than the first 40 minutes was.

There it is - Ireland have scored a try!

It's been a massive struggle so far for them but they finally get on the scoresheet - and fitting that it's Eve Higgins who crossed the line after she had a try early in the first half disallowed.

It was an excellent move from the Irish backline that delivered the ball to Higgins and the outside centre displayed superb footwork to get through and over.

We'll not dwell on Nicole Cronin's missed conversion from in front of the posts, but Ireland will be delighted with that try.

Signs of encouragement for Ireland as their backline display some fine handling and inventive passing to begin to make gains into French territory.

Nothing like a bit of pressure to remind your hosts you're still in this game, even if the French defence is looking solid.

  12. converted try

France scrum-half Laure Sansus doesn't half know how to spot a gap in front of the try line.

The creative scrum-half shows cuteness and agility to nip in for her second try of the game - and France's fifth - which this time is converted by Caroline Drouin to take the game even further away from Ireland.

That's 33-0 and you just wonder how many points this French team feel like putting on the board in Toulouse.

It’s been such a frustrating game. We’ve seen a few glimpses of Ireland doing good things but the majority of what we saw in that first half was unforced errors and a real struggle at set-piece as well. France are making a lot of good decisions but there have been a catalogue of errors that have prevented Ireland getting into the game.

  15. How to get into Rugby Unionpublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 2 April 2022

    BBC Sport

Camaraderie and teamwork are vital skills in most team sports, but none to the same extent as in rugby union.

From boisterous Saturday-league club houses, to schoolyard games of touch, to lining up for your country in the Six Nations, union is a sport of skill, bravery and strength.

Forwards are typically stronger, heavier and entrusted with the more physical aspects of the game, whereas backs utilise pace and agility.

It is incredibly popular at universities, and women's rugby clubs around the country are always looking for enthusiastic players and the next new pool of talent.

This would have been a first Six Nations try for Eve Higgins - and a massive early boost for Ireland - but her ninth-minute score was disallowed for an earlier obstruction at the line-out.

Let's face it, Ireland were massively up against it from the outset here and the first-half narrative will probably not surprise too many.

Total French dominance really, apart from the odd spirited break from the visitors - one of which actually led to Eve Higgins crossing for a try but it was disallowed for an earlier infringement at the line-out.

Damage limitation in the second half would seem to be the order of the day for Greg McWilliams' side.

And there's the bonus-point try for France.

It needed the TMO to confirm the decision, but Clara Joyeux showed outstanding strength to force her way over the line and get the ball grounded.

Again, it's too wide for Caroline Drouin to get the conversion, but, as we draw close to half-time, France's dominance is being emphasised time and again.
