The 2023 Six Nations is barely 10 minutes old and already 'The Fields of Athenry' rings out around the Principality Stadium.

The world's number one side are out to make a statement early doors in Cardiff.

What a piece of covering that was from Hugo Keenan, by the way, but Wales still get points on the board - and that's all that matters to them at this stage after that barnstorming start from the men in green.

  4. Penalty - Wales 3-14 Irelandpublished at 13 mins

    Wales 3-14 Ireland

Wales earn a penalty after an attacking scrum and opt for a kick at goal, rather than putting it into the corner.

Dan Biggar slots the kick and Wales are on the scoreboard, but Ireland will be happy only to concede the three points.

Great pressure on Sexton, that's what Wales have to do, great full-back play.

    Wales 0-14 Ireland

    Oh chance for Wales... finally.

Huge tackle by Gareth Thomas dislodges the ball.

Rio Dyer kicks ahead but full-back Hugo Keenan just wins the foot race.

It's never an individual runner, it is very difficult when the other runner with him takes a defender off him.

In the post contact area, Ireland are totally dominating in this first half.

  8. try

Try - Wales 0-14 Irelandpublished at 8 mins

    James Ryan, con Johnny Sexton

Short tap penalty and the big lock is over for a second Irish try.

This is almost too easy for Ireland.

  9. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Wales 0-7 Ireland

James Lowe and Hugo Keenan are so strong with the ball.

There is power all across the pitch for Ireland.

They have a penalty 10 metres out.

  10. 'Worst possible start for Wales'published at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    Wales 0-7 Ireland

    Dennis Hickie
Former Irish winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

I've got to state the obvious here. It's the worst possible start for Wales, after the atmosphere and the passion.

You can just feel the air going out of the stadium.

That's what you try to do as an opposition - get in there, get an early score and quiet the crowd down.

It only takes one big carry! When you're five metres out you only need one big carry.

Wales are under a lot of pressure, and it all came from that kick from James Lowe.

Liam Williams had to wait that extra second to touch the ball down.

Well that's about as bad a start as Wales could have imagined.

Now we'll really see what they've got.

  14. 'Dream start for Ireland'published at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    Wales 0-7 Ireland

    Tony Ward
Former Ireland fly-half on BBC Radio Ulster

Caelan Doris is almost unstoppable in that situation. I thought there was a suspicion of a forward pass from Johnny Sexton but he got away with it.

    Dream start for Ireland.

That all came from a miskick to touch.

    And Ireland are over already.

    What a start for Ireland.

Line-out inside the 22, the forwards bash it up and the number eight squeezes through.

    Wow.

As if the temperature wasn't rising enough, the heat from those flame throwers is incredible.

    Time for the anthems.

  19. Ireland 'a different team' without Gibson-Parkpublished at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    Wales v Ireland (14:15 GMT)

    Dennis Hickie
Former Irish winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Jamison Gibson-Park has been central to Ireland's developed and evolved game plan in the last two seasons.

What he does is good, if not better, than most scrum-halves in the world. He gets the ball from the contact area very quickly.

So much of the Irish game plan is based off that, so without that Ireland would be a different team.

  20. Morgan a 'carbon copy' of Van der Flierpublished at 14:11 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2023

    Wales v Ireland (14:15 GMT)

    Sam Warburton
Former Wales captain on BBC One

Wales flanker Jac Morgan is actually almost a carbon copy print of Josh van der Flier.

They are so identical I don't think there are two sevens in international rugby that are so alike.
