Sale did the double over Leicester in their two Premiership meetings this season.

They won 26-16 at Mattioli Woods Welford Road in October and then ran out 40-5 winners at home on 30 December, although that was a badly injury-hit Leicester side.

In fact, Sale have beaten them on their past six visits to AJ Bell Stadium, the most recent Tigers' success being a 35-13 victory in May 2018.

It will not be easy for Leicester, but they have to change that stat to make it to Twickenham.

    Sale v Leicester (15:00 BST)

A blow for Leicester as South Africa World Cup winner Handre Pollard has been ruled out of the match.

Jimmy Gopperth will start at number 10 instead of the Springbok fly-half and Charlie Atkinson will be on the bench.

We will not now have the battle between Pollard and George Ford at number 10.

All Sale legends and all part of the team that won the Sharks' only Premiership title when they defeated today's opponents Leicester 45-20 in the final at Twickenham.

More than 20,000 fans flocked down from the north west to rugby's HQ to see Sale triumph with that illustrious group of players.

They have not been back in the final since, but this is their chance with the semi-final on home soil.

Will the current crop - Tom and Ben Curry, George Ford and Manu Tuilagi - get the chance to repeat the feat?

  6. Team news - Sharks change entire front rowpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 14 May 2023

    Sale v Leicester (15:00 BST)

Sale have made five alterations to the team that thrashed Newcastle last Saturday in the final league game of the season.

Tom Curry returns to join brother Ben in the back row, while there is a completely different front row, with props Simon McIntyre and Nick Schonert and hooker Akker van der Merwe back in the team. Gus Warr gets the rod over Raffi Quirke at number nine.

One of the adages of English club rugby should always be - never count out Leicester Tigers.

With head coach Steve Borthwick taking up the England job and the team struggling for form, the chances of them defending their Premiership crown, won in dramatic fashion against Saracens last June, looked slim.

But Leicester, with South Africa fly-half Handre Pollard finding his feet, summoned up some of that famous Tigers spirit.

Six wins from their final seven games secured third spot and takes them up north as they try to book a return ticket to Twickenham.

What price interim head coach Richard Wigglesworth leading Leicester to glory before heading off to join up with Borthwick's England coaching staff?

Ever since he returned to the club in early 2021, director of rugby Alex Sanderson has talked about establishing Sale as a powerhouse of rugby union in the north west.

It's not easy with football giants Manchester City and Manchester United on the doorstep, but having a winning team certainly helps.

Sharks finished third two years ago before losing to Exeter in the play-offs, but this time it feels different.

They have lost just once at the AJ Bell Stadium and that home form has propelled them into the top two and a home semi-final.

Since leaving Edgeley Park in 2012, this is their biggest game in these surroundings.

A roast dinner with the family, a day out with the kids, a game of golf with your mates.

Those are some of the classic Sunday afternoon things Saracens players can enjoy today, safe in the knowledge they'll be at Twickenham on Saturday 27 May after their 38-15 win over Northampton Saints yesterday.

There is no such Sunday luxury for the players of Sale Sharks and Leicester Tigers.

They have 80 minutes ahead of them and at the end of it, they will have either joy or heartbreak with nothing in between.

It's the second Premiership semi-final and just like yesterday, it is go hard or go home.
