    Pieter-Steph du Toit

Sheer power does the trick for the Springboks.

They go through the phases, bashing Scotland backwards, and eventually Pieter-Steph du Toit barges over from close range, being carried over by a few teammates.

Manie Libbok isn't having a great time of it off the tee - his conversion is well wide.

    South Africa 6-3 Scotland

South Africa are hammering on the door here.

Blair Kinghorn does well to shoot out of the line, and prevent the ball going wide, but he inadvertently knocks on, and South Africa will have a scrum pretty close to the line.

    South Africa 6-3 Scotland

That's miles wide, and a fair way short from Manie Libbok.

    As you were.

Scotland did well at the scrum in the first half, but they concede a penalty from the first set-piece of the second period.

Manie Libbok gestures at the posts, despite the fact he's well inside his own half.

South Africa are going to go to their bench. They're going to bring on the Bomb Squad early.

Scotland will need to go to a dark place. They'll have to come off the pitch absolutely exhausted after keeping the game at a high tempo.

Scotland have to keep pushing the tempo.

    Johnnie Beattie
Former Scotland back row on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Scotland will be delighted, the mental shift with the turnovers and then shoving South Africa off their own ball - big mentality shift.

Those moments can build confidence and it is infectious. South Africa have had all the possession, but Scotland have not been broken yet. They have bent and creaked but have not conceded a try.

Those mental elements are all so important. They'll want to carry that into the second-half and challenge the Springboks.

That's a red card. That fact that it's not even been reviewed is inexcusable.

    HT: South Africa 6-3 Scotland

We've just seen a replay of an incident from the opening stages of the game, where Jesse Kriel made direct contact with Jack Dempsey's head in a tackle.

That wasn't looked at by the TMO - there just seems to be no consistency from the officials, especially when you consider Tom Curry's red card last night.

  13. Half-time South Africa 6-3 Scotlandpublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

That is that for the first half.

It's been gritty, it's been a battle, and you'd say that the two sides have cancelled each other out.

Scotland haven't clicked into gear in attack, but head to the changing rooms just three points behind, which will encourage Gregor Townsend and co.

They will take great confidence from the shots they have managed to fire, they have bust South Africa open twice they just haven't finished.

Six-nil and Scotland have not had any possession really, but get into the shed at half-time and it is a big phycological boost that we can cause havoc.
