  1. Au revoir for nowpublished at 19:20 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

It wasn't convincing, but it's job done for Wales in Nice.

They waited until the last play, but they secured that all-important bonus-point which may prove crucial in their progression out of Pool C and onto the quarter-finals.

Points wise, it's a perfect 10 for Warren Gatland - but I think we can agree the performance was far from that.

Wales now have eight days to review, re-group and reignite.

Thanks as always for joining us.

  3. Morgan the 'hero' for Wales - Thomaspublished at 19:18 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

Wales loosehead prop Gareth Thomas told S4C: "The character of the boys showed and the fitness of the players showed, from all the hard work we've done over the summer.

"The character will have pleased Warren Gatland but there's some things to work on tactically.

"Jac Morgan found out he was starting as he went into the tunnel following the warm-up, fair play to him.

"After a confrontational game last week to do another 80 minutes today he's a star, a hero.

"It's always difficult to get used to new combinations, but we've been with each other all summer so there's no excuse for that and we'll need to tidy up for the coming games."

  4. 'Beat Australia and no one will remember this'published at 19:16 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

Former Wales scrum-half Mike Phillips: "No one will remember this game if Wales go on to win their next game.

"Wales have momentum now, the players look very fit, if they do good things on the pitch people will forget about this game.

"You have to praise Portugal, they were superb tonight and that's a good thing for rugby as a whole."

  5. 'It will be interesting to see team next weekend'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

I think it is going to be interesting to see what team Warren Gatland will pick next weekend, it's going to be a difficult one.

Christ Tshiunza went well, Dewi Lake was strong with his ball carrying, Tomos Williams changed the game. It is a difficult one to pick.

You look at Fiji - what a game. It's hard to make a change from a winning team, he will probably look at one or two positions and make changes to suit the way we should play against Australia.

  6. 'Things will have to improve'published at 19:12 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

Former Wales forwards coach Robin McBryde told S4C: "It's hard to build pressure if you don't keep hold of the ball.

"I'm sure Wales are frustrated, sometimes you have games like that where things don't quite click.

"Without doubt now, with Australia coming, things will have to improve.

"Today's game showed how much those players needed another game for their match fitness."

  7. 'All that matters is we got the win'published at 19:11 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

All that matters is we got the win and we got the bonus point, it's massive for the group stage moving forward, we can look forward to Australia.

  8. 'It wasn't pretty but we got the job done' - Gatlandpublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

Wales head coach Warren Gatland speaking on ITV: "It wasn’t pretty but we got the job done.

"A few of the boys looked a bit rusty having not played together, but we'll take the win and move on.

"People had an opportunity today and we’ll review that to see who performed well.

"I thought Rio Dyer looked sharp on the wing, I was impressed with his aerial work.

"Our lineout didn't function as well as we would have liked and we were a bit lateral at times. When we were direct and won the contact we looked comfortable.

"In fairness to Portugal, they put us under pressure they moved the ball well and I was impressed with them."

  9. 'If we are going to push on, we've got to be better'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

    Nicky Robinson
Former Wales and Cardiff fly-half on BBC Radio Wales

I thought Rio Dyer's work off the ball was excellent, he's been excellent since he's come into the squad.

Everyone got through the game and got minutes under their belt and got on the park which is what this game was going to be for.

We would have liked to have seen Wales play better with more fluidity and accuracy, they will be disappointed with that.

But we got there in the end and that was the main thing, if we are going to push on we've got to be better than that today.

  10. 'We've got to be better' - Lakepublished at 19:07 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

Wales captain Dewi Lake told ITV: "All credit to Portugal we knew they'd stick with us, they aren't here for no reason.

"We definitely saw some nerve wracking moments, they deserved their try but for us going forward we have got to be better, we've got to be more clinical in the 22.

"I think last weekend we showed how clinical we could be and this weekend we let that slip, a lot of work ons for us to take but what matters is we got the bonus point and we got the job done."

  11. 'It's a concern how this group played'published at 19:05 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

    Caryl James
Former Wales wing on BBC Radio Cymru

All the changes were a factor to the performance, the back three didn't gel, neither did the centres and the half-backs didn't play together.

From here on, Warren Gatland has to play his best team, no more chances for players to impress.

With Australia and Georgia coming it's a concern how this group of players played.

  13. 'Work to do' for Walespublished at 19:00 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

    Emyr Lewis
Former Wales flanker on BBC Radio Cymru

The bonus point will be really important but so is points difference and the number of tries you score, especially if Fiji win tomorrow.

I hope Fiji don't win against Australia because then Wales should be secure in going through [to the quarter finals].

Desperately disappointed with the performances but extremely happy to get the win and also the bonus point.

But there's work to do if Wales are to go further in this competition.

  14. Fourth try 'massive' for Wales - Eliaspublished at 18:58 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

Wales hooker Ryan Elias told S4C: "It was massive for us to get that fourth try there, Portugal were a difficult team to break down.

"We gave too many cheap things to Portugal but they were physical and they kept at it till the end.

"It was frustrating for us as a team as we wanted to play with tempo but we killed ourselves and gave them back the ball in their 22.

"We'll have a look at the video this week and see what we did wrong, overplaying a bit."

  16. 'Full credit to Portugal' - Morganpublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

Wales flanker Jac Morgan told ITV: "Tommy Reffell pulled out last minute in the warm up but we hope we'll be alright.

"We've got to give full credit to Portugal they were brilliant today.

"They really brought that physicality and really tested us a a lot of times in that game."

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

    Caryl James
Former Wales wing on BBC Radio Cymru

I would have liked Wales' forwards to take more control of the ball, going through the phases, tiring out Portugal's forwards and then spreading the ball.

Wales were spreading poor ball today, there was no composure in the players and you saw they missed Dan Biggar today.

  18. Postpublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

As Portugal go to thank their fans, Wales are still locked in a huddle.

It wasn't pretty, but it was job done.

There will be a tough review to come on Monday.

  19. 'That's a game we will definitely forget about'published at 18:48 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

    FT: Wales 28-8 Portugal

    Nicky Robinson
Former Wales and Cardiff fly-half on BBC Radio Wales

There were positives, Christ Tshinza carried well, Johnny Williams did well, Louis Rees-Zammit good, Rio Dyer was busy.

On the whole there were too many errors, it's a game we'll definitely forget about but they got the crucial four tries and five points and that was the main point of tonight.

  20. Man of the Match - Jac Morganpublished at 18:47 British Summer Time 16 September 2023

Wales' co-captain was a late call-up to the starting XV with Tommy Reffell unfortunate to suffer an injury in the warm-up.

Morgan played a full 80 minutes after facing Fiji just six days ago, and produced a man of the match performance.
