Well, that's all for tonight folks.

What a match, that will live long in the memory!

You can read Matt Gault's report from the Stade de France here and keep an eye out for reaction on the BBC Sport website.

Remember, Scotland take on Tonga in Pool B tomorrow and it isn't long until Wales face Australia in another big one.

Ireland are back in action against Sotland on 7 October and have a well-earned week off.

We're off for a lie down. Night all!

More reaction from Andy Farrell on BBC Radio Ulster:

"It's another game in our journey, isn't it, and I think everyone can see that there's not much between the two sides. We have a game against Scotland and that's our next focus and we'll see where we take it from there."

  5. 'A tale of two halves'published at 22:26 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

    FT: South Africa 8-13 Ireland

Andy Farrell speaking on BBC Radio Ulster:

"Unbelievably proud, I'm sure the South Africa coaching staff are unbelievably proud as well."

"It was some battle - a tale of two halves. I thought we dominated the opposition in the first half and they certainly did in the second and sometimes we were hanging on in there, but that's what it takes in matches like this, so we're very pleased with the win, obviously."

South Africa will be disappointed no doubt about it but they will be there come the latter stages of this competition and I wouldn't bet against meeting them again.

  7. 'As good as it can get'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

    FT: South Africa 8-13 Ireland

Here's more from Mack Hansen: "They are the defending champions and they know exactly what it takes to win this World Cup. To get a win over them is as good as it can get really.

"It gives us a lot of strength and a lot of belief. We have a tough week against a really good Scotland side and if we get the win there, and everything goes well, it' either France or New Zealand [in the quarter-finals].

"It doesn't get any easier at all. We'll take this win and enjoy it for now, then it is straight on to the next."

  8. 'Atmosphere like Grand Slam on steroids'published at 22:19 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

    FT: South Africa 8-13 Ireland

Ireland try scorer Mack Hansen, speaking to ITV Sport: "It was like a Grand Slam on steroids out there. It was crazy"

He then swears, which we can understand given the adrenaline out there.

"It seemed like there was 800,000. It was incredible out there and we needed every single one of them to get a job done against a really good South African side.

"They are so big and physical and they showed up tonight. The fans got us over the line there."

It was a scrappy game - it was a battle of two Titians who were trying to find each other out and it was a physical arm-wrestle as well.

We knew it was going to come down to fine margins and ultimately those missed penalties and the missed conversion took momentum away from South Africa and obviously just gave Ireland another leg.

    FT: South Africa 8-13 Ireland

Johnny Sexton speaking on BBC Radio Ulster:

"This crowd, it's incredible how many people turned up today and I don't know how we do it time after time after time. We didn't want to let them down, it was a scrappy old game and we couldn't seem to get into any flow and neither could they, which was a real arm wrestle.

"To dog it out against a team like that is a testament to us and the management. Fair play to South Africa, they made the game so tough to play."

  12. 'One hell of a game'published at 22:09 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

    FT: South Africa 8-13 Ireland

South Africa fly-half Manie Libbok, speaking to ITV: "It was one hell of a game. Ireland brought it to us but I am proud of the boys for sticking in there and giving it our all.

    "We were unlucky.

"Obviously in a game like this you have to take your points and you have to convert pressure into points. Unfortunately we didn't get it right."

On Ireland: "Without a doubt they are a class outfit. They have quality players all around the park and they are a good team."

We talked a lot about the South African bomb squad, but the Irish bomb squad they came on and did a magnificent job to stop South African momentum and to just take it to the South African side.

The likes of Kilcoyne, Bealham, those set piece penalties to win that final penalty and obviously Iain Henderson himself made a massive impact his ability in the line-out, his carries, I thought he was superb.

Bundee Aki speaking to ITV Sport:

"I'm lost for words. These Irish fans are incredible. Honestly, I've never, ever witnessed anything like it, the travelling crowd, it's a joke, completely a joke and it's only going to get bigger and crazier from here on in.

"Fair play to the boys for playing that well today. South Africa are an outstanding team. They are world champions for a reason."

"As a group and as a team we knew coming into this game, we knew we had to be a lot better than the previous games, in all areas of our game. We knew South Africa were going to bring it to us and look, they did. They put us under an immense amount of pressure but we trusted each other and the belief we have in this group is outstanding."

A word on South Africa, who more than played their part tonight.

Remember, they lost a Pool match in 2019 and we all know how that ended.

You can't rule the Springboks out just yet.

We've just been spoiled with Irish Rugby in the last few years, the achievements that they've made time and time again.

For such a long time it was Ireland who could always pull off a win on their day, but the consistency they've brought and I don't think these Irish fans are going to leave this stadium for a long time!
