Well... it's a bitter sweet afternoon for Wales at the World Cup.

Tomas Francis and Liam Williams crossed early but Wales had to survive a Georgian flurry in the second half that narrowed the lead to 24-19 just after an hour.

Louis Rees-Zammit scored his first hat-trick for Wales before George North completed a handsome scoreline.

The bonus-point win means Wales top Pool C and march into the quarter-finals unbeaten.

But it has come at a heavy price.

Taulupe Faletau has been ruled out of the World Cup with a broken arm, a major blow for Welsh hopes going into the knock-out phases.

Gareth Anscombe is also a concern after injuring his groin before kick-off.

All eyes will now be on Argentina v Japan tomorrow, also in Nantes, to decide who will face Wales in Marseille next Saturday.

So join us next week to see if Wales can make a fourth World Cup semi-final.

    Au revoir.

I'd probably prefer Japan next, Argentina haven't been playing too well but you never know they could pull it out of the bag they are always a very strong team.

I feel like we got the edge and keeping this momentum is key.

Former Wales scrum-half Mike Phillips on S4C: "Japan haven't fired yet and that's the worry, we saw them firing at the last World Cup.

"Wales will have to attack a bit better but they are in a good position with confidence and in a good place with players to come back in.

"Argentina are so emotional and they've shown a lack of discipline so far in this World Cup but they're always difficult to play against."

There was a lot of good individual performances, Liam Williams was good in all aspects.

Rio Dyer justified his spot in the starting line up and today his kick chase was fantastic. He was brilliant in the air, his work-rate is immense full credit to him.

  7. No worries over Liam - Gatlandpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

    FT: Wales 43-19 Georgia

Given the loss of Taulupe Faletau, it's no wonder Warren Gatland has moved to quickly quell any concerns over Liam Williams.

He told the press conference: "If you do see Liam Williams on crutches, it's not that he's done anything significant, he just got a whack on the knee.

"He probably won't take a part in a huge amount of training in the early part of next week.

    "Hopefully he'll be fine."

  8. Faletau a 'giant' - Daviespublished at 16:54 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

    FT: Wales 43-19 Georgia

Former Wales Fly-half Jonathan Davies on S4C: "You look at Gareth Anscombe he hasn't got a lot of time to get back.

"It would be a shame to lose both him and Faletau, but especially Faletau, he's a giant of a player for Wales.

"Wales have played well and they're confident so it doesn't matter who we'll play from Japan and Argentina but hopefully Wales will go through to the semi-finals."

Warren Gatland has told the post-match press conference: "Toby has broken his arm, so he'll be out.

"We are just going to assess Gareth [Anscombe] over the next 72 hours. He has pulled his groin very high up. He's got a bit of power and stood on his leg which is a positive, it means it's not come off the bone.

"We will probably know in the next 48 hours in terms of what we need to do with him, whether we have time for him to recover or whether we need to make a replacement.

"Obviously we've got to look at a replacement for Faletau, whether that's a loose forward replacement or whether we look at another position."

    FT: Wales 43-19 Georgia

Wales co-captain Jac Morgan on S4C: "I'm chuffed with the win and we're off to Marseille now.

"There were a lot of good things from that game but also a lot of things to work on.

"We'll look more at the attack ahead of next week but the game today showed the importance of the tactical battle because at the start of the second half we weren't quite at it and we let Georgia back into the game.

"Japan and Argentina are different but would both be difficult."

Wales flanker and player of the match Tommy Reffell said on S4C:

"I'm sore after that one! We knew what to expect against Georgia having lost to them in November at the Principality Stadium.

"We knew we had to really up it in the scrums and mauls, but they can also play out the back a lot better. They have threats around the park and it was down to us to shut them down."

On missing the Portugal game Reffell added: "That's rugby. The boys saw I was down after the Portugal match and they picked me up for this game.

"Everywhere we go the crowds have been fantastic and you can see it transfer onto the field with the team as well."

Wales head coach Warren Gatland told ITV:

"It was a bit messy and ugly but we got the job done.

"We had to deal with a few challenges before kick off and Georgia are a tough team to put away so I'm pleased that we go the result we were looking for.

"Sam Costelow was thrown in the deep end and he did really well, so I'm pleased with that. There were a few moments when there were opportunities had we made different decisions and not kicked.

"But we didn't want to allow the Georgian team any soft roads in to us so I was pleased for him.

"I don't know about Gareth Anscombe. He's got a tweak in the groin while doing some kicking before kick off. We will asses that over the next 48 hours.

"I haven't spoken to the medics about Toby yet, but it didn't look great."

On hat-trick hero Louis Rees-Zammit, Gatland said:

"To get a hattrick today was pleasing from his perspective

"He needs to get the ball in his hands a little bit more and I want to see him taking players on one-on-one more.

"He's got so much growth in him as a player, we've been really pleased with his progress."

    FT: Wales 43-19 Georgia

Former Wales scrum-half Mike Phillips on S4C:

"Wales have to be positive about the win, maybe not the most perfect performance but you have to praise the players for getting through to the quarter-finals without losing a single game.

"There are always things to improve from each game, but when the pressure was on Wales showed their quality and were clinical."
