"They sucker-punched us on a few tries and that's what champion teams do. We knew they were a great side and we fell just short unfortunately.

“It's been amazing. This six weeks has been a dream - this group, these fans and I'm just gutted we couldn't do it for them."

On his family being at the stadium: "You've got to work hard for fairytale endings and we didn't get it but that's life. We left no stone unturned, we ticked every box, trained the house down, and played pretty well tonight.

"But fair play to the All Blacks."

New Zealand head coach Ian Foster speaking after the game: "Fantastic. We all knew it was going to be a monster game. We had been talking about it all week - and it was. It was a real arm wrestle.

"They're a proud team, Ireland, they really hung in there. I thought we had them a couple of times but they kept making the game really tight.

"I am so proud of the way we played. Our defence, particularly in that last part, was brilliant."

On the final play: "I thought we were really good. We were disciplined, we held our cool. I thought defensively we made some shifts and found a way of stopping their line breaks coming to us. It just became a game of patience in the end and we did it well."

Johnny Sexton is someone who is so hard to replace, we could be waiting a while for that replacement. He is an amazing player, one of the best in the world for so long, he is like one in a million.

He should be incredibly proud of his career, he has earned his retirement.

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell speaking after the game: “I'm unbelievably proud of the group, everyone that's been involved over the last couple of years. That was one hell of a game and somebody had to lose - unfortunately it was us tonight."

On the result: “Two good teams going at it, fine margins and all that. At the start of the game we coughed up penalties and gave them field position and six points.

"I was so proud of the way we came back and kept attacking them right until the death. We've had a good run, but sport can be cruel sometimes - I guess that's why we love it. The way we kept battling shows the character of this side."

On Johnny Sexton: "I can't do it justice quickly. First and foremost he's an outstanding human being. He's probably the best ever player to play for Ireland and when you're 38 and playing your best rugby, it says a lot about the man."

The players look a bit shell-shocked here. Everyone is so proud of this team, they have been inspiring to fans here and at home. It is so cruel it has ended like this, it is a missed opportunity.

All Blacks captain Sam Cane speaking after the game: "We are absolutely stoked. It was a crazy Test match, an absolute arm wrestle for 83 or 84 minutes, both teams going at it. A lot of credit has to go to Ireland.

"They have set the standard around world rugby for the last couple of years so we knew the challenge that we had here tonight.

"I am super proud of the effort that went into the week's preparation. Our ability to defend our line for 30-plus phases at the end, that's huge. What an atmosphere, what a game, what a tournament to be part of and I'm just really happy to have another week."

On the sin-bins: "We don't want to be playing with 14 men but we had to twice there. The boys dug a bit deeper. The defence was outstanding. We were able to hold them out for long periods and I think ultimately that's what won it for us. I'm super-stoked.

"I want to thank all our supporters. There are plenty here and all the ones who are back home, it means a lot. I can't wait to get stuck in to another week."

On playing Argentina: "There will be some tired bodies. The first couple of days will be about getting our recovery and filling up the tank again. We are looking forward to it and I can't wait."

It's some contrast in the Stade de France compared to previous weeks, where the Irish fans had to be told to leave before the party slipped onto the Parisian streets.

The ground is almost empty, with the travelling support wondering what could have been.

No team wants to come off the field at this stage of the tournament having not felt that they gave it their best, so you have got to feel for Ireland. They don't feel like they gave it their best shot. Part of that was the All Blacks were able to nullify a lot of their game, they did their homework for this big occasion.

It wasn't all perfect for New Zealand, they know they have a bit to work on but they played above what their supporters were expecting and maybe what Ireland were expecting.

It is still sinking in, it is hard to believe. There were a few big moments in the second half which went New Zealand's way.

Will Jordan's try was a real kick in the teeth and tough to take mentally.

It was incredible discipline and defending from New Zealand at the end. They really stepped it up in this game and dug so deep, it was a different New Zealand team to the one I have seen in this World Cup.

Ireland gave everything they had, they were just repelled. There is nothing between the sides.

Johnny Sexton is getting a standing ovation. You can see this is a really difficult moment for him. He is fuming, he knew this game was here for the taking. I am devastated for him and absolutely heartbroken for this Irish team, they have set this World Cup alight both with the supporters and the rugby that this team have played.

Never mind the Irish team, the Irish support will be a big loss for the rest of this tournament.

They've lit up the World Cup with colour and noise, and they delivered again tonight even if the result didn't go their way.
