The big question is should England fear New Zealand if they reach the final?

The All Blacks will take either of us, for sure. Their squad always will have that unique fear factor, and after tonight's performance, I would not like to be the team facing them in the final. England need to bring their A game against South Africa tomorrow. I am optimistic that we will beat the Boks, but we will need to raise our game to another level to beat this mighty All Blacks side. Relying on our key players will only work so much.

  5. 'Our forwards did an outstanding job'published at 22:30 British Summer Time 20 October 2023

New Zealand captain Sam Cane, speaking after the game: "It means a heck of a lot. It was a tough game out there tonight. I thought our forwards did an outstanding job.

Set-piece, maul time, earned a few penalties, got a bit of dominance and it kept a lot of pressure on the Argentinians.

"We knew they're a team that will fight for everything and they wouldn't go away. So that ability to keep piling on points was pleasing.

"We are in a good spot, in the final, exactly where we wanted to be. Amazing support, a lot of black jerseys out here. I know there will be heaps at home cheering us on too so it's going to be an exciting week ahead."

On it being close in the first half: "Yeah, it was tight. We managed to get a couple of tries early but then it was a real arm wrestle for a while.

"The scrum penalty just before half-time, we were able to kick for touch. We had numerous phases and then Shannon Frizell scored right on half-time.

"Then those couple of minutes after half-time when Aaron Smith scored, I thought they were really crucial moments.

    "Pretty stoked!"

Argentina head coach Michael Cheika, speaking after the game: "Incredibly disappointing for us. The effort was huge. They put everything out there and I think it was just in the details of the game.

"The small details on transition in scrums, the last couple of minutes before half-time, the first couple of minutes after half-time - they are the little nuances that we don’t have yet in our game.

"But we’ve certainly got a lot to be proud of. I know the score was hard but their effort today, their defence and their work around the field. Just didn’t have the class to match New Zealand."

On the third place play-off: "It’s not finished yet. It’s not finished. We want to go home with a medal. So next week is huge for us.

"I am not sure if you get one [a medal] for coming third but I think that’s the way it sort of works. We will have to get over tonight because we really believed we could get in there and do something and it’s going to hurt."

On the support for the team: "I want to really thank our fans. Sorry it wasn’t a bit closer tonight. They’ve been huge for us and I look forward to next week and seeing them there as well."

This game makes a mockery of the draw. Argentina looking out of their depth at this stage of the competition. Hoping England don’t go the same way!

Will it now be a repeat of the 2019 semi-final? Or the 1995 final?

    England or South Africa.

I wonder who New Zealand want?

New Zealand head coach Ian Foster, speaking after the game: "It's everything. It's the goal. We came here wanting to be in the final and then we obviously want to go and win it. We have given ourselves that opportunity.

"I am incredibly proud of the way we backed it up tonight. I thought it was a tough game. We got asked a lot of questions from Argentina early.

"We held great composure and finished strong so I am pretty pleased."

On the positives to take into the final: "Semi-finals, it's a lot of pressure on. Argentina threw a lot at us early. I felt we stayed in the game.

"We were hanging in there a bit defensively but we kept our cool, kept control and when we won the ball we were able to punish them. That three or four minutes before half-time was pretty important, those eight points - it gave us that buffer."

On reaching the final: "I am part of the group that is working hard to do that. It is really satisfying but now all the pressure of the final comes.

"We will enjoy the moment and then wake up tomorrow and get to work."

Argentina captain Julian Montoya, speaking after the game: "Every opportunity they had, they scored. An awesome team and they were the better team today by far.

"We were far from our level that we wanted to show. I am gutted and I am really disappointed of that. Our dream of playing in a final is over but we still have work to do.

"Credit to the All Blacks as well, a great team, but we could have done better."

On the Argentinian support: "First of all I want to say thank you to all the people of Argentina who were here, they were really, really loud.

"I know it was tough for us being so far away and people making the effort to support us. So, thank you very much for them and the people that saw us from Argentina as well."

New Zealand centre Jordie Barrett, speaking after the game: "It's so sweet. It's new territory for this group. We slipped at the semi-final hurdle four years ago.

"I am just so proud of this group. It's not done yet. We will have a very tough match regardless of who we have next week. It's another week, which we are so grateful for."

On their defensive effort: "The conditions actually helped us a little bit. We were able to go forward and put their skillset under a wee bit of pressure with the greasy ball.

"One to eight laid a massive foundation for us. Scrum penalties and some maul penalties took the sting out of their legs. The big boys did an outstanding job."

On building up to a final: "I guess, it's new territory for a lot of boys but we also have World Cup winners and World Cup finalists so we will call on their experience as much as we can.

"We are just going to enjoy the week as much as possible. It's special times."

I was rooting for Argentina, but as an England supporter if you lose to us with 14 men you're not going to beat the All Blacks. End of.

Considering the quality of the quarter-finals that was a bit of an embarrassing semi-final. Something has to be done about the make up of the groups. Having the top four teams in the world against each other in the quarters seems stupid, if it leads to these kind of semi-finals.

    Justin Marshall
Former New Zealand scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

Argentina have just been outclassed, they have tried really hard but nothing has come off for them. But the All Blacks were very impressive.

I think the All Blacks were in first gear from kick-off, looked every bit to have the intent to play. As the game went on they got good at the set-piece, with the scrum in particular.

New Zealand won penalties from the scrum and got a try from it, they kept enough pressure on Argentina and they will be pleased with their performance.

Vindication for Ian Foster. Foster suffered negative feedback, but the biggest support he got was from his players.

Perhaps Argentina have just played as they have played in every match at the Rugby World Cup and finally they are up against a decent team.
