England captain Owen Farrell, speaking on ITV: "I am proud. I thought we started really well. It was a scrappy game after that.

"The back of another six-day turnaround and a narrow loss last week, it was great to win tonight.

"You have to be able to play rugby a few ways and we are developing that and hopefully it will keep improving. I know we will improve. But proud of the effort the lads have put in."

On retiring players Courtney Lawes and Ben Youngs: "It takes a lot of games and a lot of work to stay around this team for that long."

England flanker Sam Underhill on being called up to join the squad during the World Cup: "It is a bit surreal. It's been a great few weeks, I've loved being part of this group.

"It is an honour to represent your country and being able to send off as many storied players as we are, it is amazing to be part of it."

On holding off Argentina: "We just stuck to our game plan, we didn't panic.

"A lot of the lads know it is the last 20 minutes of these games that matter. We stuck to our plan and that is testament to them."

England hooker Theo Dan, speaking on ITV: "Obviously we made it hard for ourselves, we got off to a good start and we know Argentina are a team that are never going away. Ill-discipline let them back into the game.

"I am very proud of this team and proud to get bronze."

On missing a tackle and then scoring: "Bit of a rollercoaster! I missed the tackle and then went straight to scoring a try, going under the sticks. A rollercoaster few minutes but very pleased with the performance."

On looking ahead to the Six Nations: "It is something we spoke about in the group. We are still heartbroken from last weekend. The performance was something we were proud of and we want to build momentum and grind out a result, today we achieved that."

On it being his last England performance: "The game has given me so much. I have got huge friendships and bonds not just in this England team, but people I have played against for years.

In their opening match, with 14 men for 79 minutes, England rather easily beat Argentina. Tonight, with 15 men, it's much closer. Is the main difference the choice of fly-half?

Good to sign off with a win but we were lucky not to lose that. Argentina looked so dangerous going forward. Sad to see some great names go but as is always the way after a tournament. Finishing third after that World Cup build-up is something to be proud of.

Steve Borthwick will be delighted that after failing to close out the game last week against South Africa due to their scrum, the front five buckled down and got the win for England.

You wonder if that late penalty should have went to the corner by Argentina as well.

So many small margins - that is World Cup rugby.
