  1. Until the World Cup!published at 18:25 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

Well that's that. Wales' warm-up matches are over and the next time the team takes the field will be in the World Cup opener against Fiji in Bordeaux.

One win from three is far from ideal and Wales will still be kicking themselves at that last 15 minutes at Twickenham.

Today was always going to be a struggle when you looked at the huge difference in experience between the teams selected.

This was close to a full-strength South Africa team who are set on defending their World Cup.

However we weren't expecting a record defeat in Cardiff to the Springboks. Let's face it, 50 points hurts.

Warren Gatland will now sit down with his management team and pick the 33 players who are heading to France.

Some players may have damaged their chances today though in reality, it was probably more about no-one grabbing their chance to steal a late place.

We'll find out Monday so join our live coverage of Gatland's World Cup squad announcement.

Wales head coach Warren Gatland told Amazon Prime: "It's disappointing, physically we were dominated both sides of the ball, for me that was disappointing.

"We gifted soft tries as well.

"I thought the yellow card on Rio Dyer was pretty harsh, the angles that we saw it looked like it hit a green hand first and then it's a penalty try and yellow card.

"Then we conceded straight after that from the kick off. It really changed the complexion going into half time as we then needed to chase it.

"We could have played a couple of players today that were carrying a few niggles, but we wanted to be training fully all week to try and build some confidence around that.

"There were some players with inexperience out there and hopefully there'll be some learning.

"I thought South Africa were very good. They didn't make many mistakes, they carried the ball well their defence put us under pressure.

"For a lot of those players playing against them, World Champions, fully loaded, it's an experience for Wales.

"It's about looking back at some of the soft points we conceded and before half time as well where can we fix those problems they're definitely fixable.

"We need to be a little bit better in terms of the contact area and cleaning out and defensively coming off the line a bit more and winning some of those collisions."

On making his squad selection for the World Cup, Gatland added: "We'll go back to the hotel tonight as a coaching team and get as close to the final squad we can.

"We'll then reconvene Sunday morning and if we've got any doubts about the squad we'll let the players know on Monday."

  4. Williams 'reasonable' - Gatlandpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

This was the first time Warren Gatland had selected Johnny Williams but hardly sounded blown away by his display.

There is fierce competition in the Welsh midfield and Williams impressed early on, particularly with his strength.

But he and fellow rookie Mason Grady were always up against it opposite one of the most experienced centre partnerships in world rugby and with back-foot ball.

Gatland told a post-match press conference: "Johnny did reasonably well.

"He carried well and created some opportunities but there was a moment when he was intercepted and perhaps should have passed earlier.

"But he hasn't played for a while and showed some nice touches early on."

  5. Still work to do at scrum - Gatlandpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

Corey Domachowski and Keiron Assiratti were handed a massive test in only their second Test appearances.

The Cardiff pair were up against a huge Springbok front-row and it showed.

Of the first five scrums, Wales conceded four penalties and a free-kick however the set-piece improved late on with the arrival of Henry Thomas and Nicky Smith.

Could that prove telling when it comes to picking the starting props.

Warren Gatland told a post-match press conference: "We had done a lot of work on the scrums, particularly regarding speed against such a big pack.

"It improved as the game went on but when you concede penalties that doesn't help the momentum of the game you want to play and puts you under huge pressure."

South Africa head coach Jaques Nienaber on Amazon Prime: "Hats off to Wales I think if you look at the squad they selected for this specific game, there are guys on the fringes.

"We thought they would be very courageous and they were, so we had to be very good in what we do if we wanted to get a result today.

"We're building, we've got another warm-up game against New Zealand on Friday so nice short turnaround.

"Our most important game is Scotland [at the World Cup].

"I think there were some good reads today and good intentions.

"We scored eight tries, I thought there were another four opportunities just before half time, I thought we left those on the field.

"Going into a World Cup and the pool that we are in, we have to make sure we nail those."

On potentially winning the World Cup again Nienaber said: "That's obviously our aim, it would be amazing to go back-to-back, only one team has done that before.

"If we can do that we will be the first nation to win four World Cups.

"It's a good driver for us and to make history like that. We will enjoy tonight and stay firmly on the ground because there's a lot of work to do still."

  7. Wales kicking mixed - Gatlandpublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

Kieran Hardy was praised by Warren Gatland for his kicking but that was an area where fly-half Sam Costelow failed to impress.

Speaking at the post-match press conference Wales head coach Warren Gatland added: "We were disjointed in attack after creating a few opportunities.

"We had some success with our box kicking but there was not enough variety in the rest of our kicking."

  8. 'Some easy fixes' - Gatlandpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

Speaking at the post-match press conference Wales head coach Warren Gatland said: "I'm not happy with today but pretty pleased with the general progression over the few weeks.

"If you're looking for some positives for the future it's that four or five of those tries are easy enough to stop with time to fix things.

"We've given a lot of youngsters time and experience against one of the best teams in the world.

"However contact wise we needed to be better and quicker to the breakdown.

"We needed quicker line speed in defence to counter their physical dominance. So there's a lot to learn."

  9. Dyer unlucky - Gatlandpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

Speaking at the post-match press conference Wales head coach Warren Gatland said: "Rio Dyer was really unlucky with his yellow card.

"The ball clearly touched a green player and it was a hard call.

"Then we conceded a try straight away and that was a big moment in the game."

"Only positive is that there is a lot of learning."

  11. Postpublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

Speaking at the post-match press conference Wales head coach Warren Gatland said: "Perhaps it has made our selection easier.

"We will go back to the hotel tonight and have a chat with the coaches and then a final conversation in the morning.

"Possibly some of the questions we had have been answered and it's made things a little easier.

"We wanted to give everyone an opportunity because we know we're going to pick up injuries in the World Cup and we want people who have had time with the group."

  12. 'The people of Wales should be proud of their team'published at 17:47 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

South Africa captain Siya Kolisi told Amazon Prime: "I want to give big credit to the team we worked really hard today, but credit to Wales too because we understand what they're going through as a group.

"A lot of guys have stopped playing and a lot of new ones have come in. I think the people of Wales need to keep supporting their team, the team need that.

"They've got so many young guys and they will get it right. Everyone should be proud of them, we knew they were going to give it everything.

"They could have given up but they kept fighting to the end, so the people of Wales should be proud of their team.

"Wales are building a lot of young guys and for the future of Wales it's looking very bright. We are proud of what we did today but the job is not done."

On his return from injury Solisi added: "I've been praying, God has been good to me and my wife has been by my side.

"It's belief, mental belief. Also the guys that have been through it, whenever I was in a tough place saying that I could get through it."

  13. 'Defensively Wales not up to the task'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

    Emyr Lewis
Former Wales flanker on BBC Radio Cymru

It was a thrashing as simple as that. South Africa were much stronger than Wales, much more physical, more competitive and they had the platform from the forwards.

I was hoping for Wales to get level in the forwards, but that didn't happen and because of that they were always on the backfoot.

South Africa had some luck but having said that they were brilliant.

Defensively Wales weren't up to the task and the clean ball the Springboks had allowed them to cross the gainline and Wales couldn't cope with them.

  14. 'Disappointed but we can take faith' - Morganpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

Wales captain Jac Morgan has told Amazon Prime: "There were a few green shoots of promise.

"We're disappointed with the result but full credit to South Africa, they were outstanding and very strong.

"We knew they were going to be very physical with some big boys but we kept defending right to the end and we can take a bit of faith from that."

There was a significant difference in the experience between the two teams but Morgan felt Wales could - and should - have done better.

"It doesn't really matter about the teams," said Morgan.

"We are disappointed with that, there were mistakes that we'll need to work on and we've got a few weeks to sort them out.

"There were a lot of learnings from that one."

  16. 'We had a plan and we executed it'published at 17:30 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

South Africa wing Canon Moodie told Amazon Prime: "We knew Wales were a tough team, they had a lot of changes in their starting line-up but we had a plan and we executed it today.

"Fortunately for me I’ve got the backing of the coaches and teammates to get the best of my ability.

"When the World Cup squad was announced it was amazing, four years ago I was still at school.

"Every opportunity I get I try to play at my best.

"You want to make the most of the opportunities, we have lots of competition as wingers but when you have the opportunities you have to use them."

That was absolutely brutal for Wales.

Eight tries, 52 points and a record defeat in Cardiff to South Africa.

By some miracle the one positive is there doesn't seem to be too many new injuriy concerns.

Rio Dyer was forced off with a head injury but now has plenty of time to recover.

  19. 'The gap is huge'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

    Caryl James
Former Wales wing on BBC Radio Cymru

Wales were playing against a brilliant team today, a side in the Springboks that are ready to win the World Cup again this year.

    The gap is huge.

Defensively I thought Wales had made huge improvements since the Six Nations in the games against England but that game highlighted the difference in the standard between teams like England and South Africa.

Wales struggled with one on one tackles today which meant that outside players had to come in and help so the bonds in the defence were broken.

  20. Man of the Match - Canan Moodiepublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Wales 16-52 South Africa

I hardly had a chance to tell you but Springbok wing Moodie was the man of the match.

Two tries and some great touches. He looks like he could be a star of the World Cup.
