You may not like it, but it's a key area of the game nowadays.

South Africa look physical and organised.

It all came from the Tom Rogers penalty and then the pressure came on.

The lineout was very effective and the Springboks went through phase after phase.

Then Siya Kolisi does brilliantly going between two players and offloading superbly.

    Malcolm Marx

What a start for the Boks.

Siya Kolisi's handling was superb but got the pass out of the tackle for the hooker.

Tom Rogers showed a little inexperience there in coming out of the line but it was all about the pass from the captain.

You'd never know he's been out since April.

Fair play, that was a good rendition of the South African national anthem.

I think every ex-pat in the UK is here in Cardiff.

For Wales there's a responsibility on the forwards to get some kind of platform, otherwise there's no point in the forwards being on the pitch!

I'm hoping Wales can be competitive physically and make sure South Africa don't get it all their own way because otherwise it's going to be a very difficult day and Wales will get destroyed.

It has been a long three months for the Wales squad with gruelling fitness camps in Turkey and Switzerland.

Now 23 of the 48-man squad will have a final chance to lay down a marker today, less than 48 hours before Warren Gatland names his 33-man squad on Monday?

Who will be the centres? Is it too late for Johnny Williams? Can the Cardiff props today impress enough to get the nod? Will lock Ben Carter force his way into the reckoning?

Just some of the questions that need to be answered.

Props Corey Domachowski and Keiron Assiratti.

The Cardiff pair had mixed fortunes on their debuts against England two weeks ago.

The scrums were a mess - partly due to the referee - and today will mark probably the biggest test of their careers.

Hold their own today and they could play themselves into a starting place at the World Cup.

Cai Evans makes his Wales debut 36 years after his father Ieuan first pulled on the jersey.

Evans junior didn't expect to start but gets the 15 shirt after Liam Williams withdrew.

He has a slim chance to make France... but who knows what could happen.

Johnny Williams has had to bide his time but finally gets a shot to impress.

Centre is Wales most uncertain position and this is the 22nd combination in 41 games since the last World Cup.

There's fierce competition for - possibly - four places.

  18. Cuthbert's hopes over?published at 15:06 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

Wales v South Africa (15:15 BST)

You have to feel for Alex Cuthbert.

Today was meant to be his big chance to stake a claim for France but injury has ruled him out.

He was riding the crest of a wave after scoring twice against England to clinch a Six Nations title 10 years ago and book his place with the British & Irish Lions.

However injuries have blighted his last couple of seasons.

He was a bit part in the Six Nations with a foot injury and then missed this summer's training camps in Switzerland and Turkey and Wales' opening two warm-up matches with a calf injury.

Wales v South Africa (15:15 BST)

Even their own coach admits the Springboks are getting on a bit - but Jacques Nienaber hopes experience counts.

The side now ranked fourth in the world remain confident of a title defence, a result which would earn them an unprecedented fourth William Web Ellis trophy.

South Africa head into the 2023 World Cup without some of their stars from Japan four years ago, with both fly-half Handrè Pollard and defensive captain Lukhanyo Am left out of the 33-man squad with injury.

This is likely to be the final World Cup for several Boks, who have an average age just under 30, including the likes of 37-year-old number eight Dwayne Vermeulen who captained the Springboks twice in Siya Kolisi's absence.

"We have more depth than we had in 2019," said Nienaber who was assistant coach at the last World Cup.

"But we have a little bit of an older squad. It's not old but they're four years older and there's probably two thirds of that team that were a part of the 2019 World Cup.

"What we say is with an experienced squad, you lose a little bit of agility and speed but you get calm heads, experience and good leaders, so there's things you gain and things you lose."

South Africa expect another arm-wrestle against Wales in Saturday's World Cup warm-up match in Cardiff.

Nine of the last 12 games between Wales and the Springboks - including the 2019 World Cup semi-final - have been decided by fewer than seven points.

And head coach Jacques Nienaber is braced for more of the same with World Cup selection on the line.

He said: "It's always been a tight affair and we expect exactly that. It's going to be a grind."

He added: "If you look statistically at test matches between South Africa and Wales, there's two or three points between the matches since myself and Rassie [Erasmus] have been back.

"If you look at what Wales did against England it was a grind there and we expect it's going to be a proper test match for us."
