Both of these sides got off to a strong start in their inaugural WXV1 fixtures, picking up bonus point wins.

England are top of the pool following a 42-7 victory over Australia, while the Canadians saw off Wales 42-22.

Victory for either side here could go a long way towards determining the first WXV1 champion.

England interim head coach Louis Deacon says his successor John Mitchell has been involved in picking the Red Roses side to face Canada in WXV1.

Mitchell has joined up with the England women's set-up in New Zealand but is yet to take full control.

"He [Mitchell] is involved [in match selections] and he is building relationships in the group," Deacon, pictured, told BBC Sport.

"He is still working out people and understanding where we are as a group, but he has been involved in a lot of things. He is a massively experienced coach and we have really valued his input this week.

"We are learning all the time and the experience he is passing on to us coaching staff is brilliant."

Mitchell left his role as Japan men's defence coach after their final World Cup pool game with Argentina on 8 October.

  4. What is WXV?published at 06:49 British Summer Time 27 October 2023

In case you're new here and wondering what this live text is all about - there's a handy explainer here.

World Rugby has launched a new three-tier annual women's international competition, WXV. Each tier has six teams and is played in a different location, with WXV1 in New Zealand, WXV2 in South Africa, and WXV3 in the UAE.

England and Wales are in WXV1, Scotland are in WXV2 and Ireland are in WXV3.

Teams don't play everyone in their tier, instead taking on three nations from outside their continent. After Australia first and Canada here, England play New Zealand in their final fixture.

The team top of WXV1 after three games is the inaugural champion.

England have already beaten the Canadians twice in 2023, winning their recent warm-up series 2-0 at home.

The Red Roses ran in eight tries to win the first Test 50-24, however a much closer 29-12 victory in the second match indicates this game cannot be taken for granted by the world's top-ranked side.

England also beat Canada in the World Cup semi-final last year.
