Aberdeen had visions of replicating their League Cup success of 2014, but they ran in to a rampant Celtic side who show no sign of giving up the unbeaten domestic run they have embarked upon this season.

Wonderful goals from Tom Rogic and James Forrest set them on their way, and the disappointing Dons knew it was curtains when Moussa Dembele slotted home a third after the break.

A landmark trophy for Celtic in more ways than one. It is the club's 100th major trophy in their history, and it is the first piece of silverware of the Brendan Rodgers era.

His side look unstoppable at the moment, but can they maintain that standard to go on and secure a domestic treble? It will be interesting to find out.

For now, the day belongs to Celtic as they celebrate winning the League Cup for the 16th time.

Don't expect Derek McInnes to feast on this consolation crumb, but he's lucky his team lost by just - just - three goals. It could have been four or five. 

They didn't look like a team that truly believed they were good enough to put it up to Celtic. They were catastrophically hesitant at the back, lacked any kind of bite in midfield and offered little or nothing offensively. They were out-fought and out-played.

Celtic played in third gear for the entire second half and still added a third goal. Streets ahead. Scott Brown set the agenda early on and there were several big performers for Celtic. James Forrest was like a dervish at times. Really excellent.

Brendan Rodgers hasn't just won his first trophy as Celtic manager, he's won the 100th trophy for Celtic. And it was done with aplomb and ease.

"I’m absolutely delighted for the players, supporters and staff. It’s something tangible to show for the quality of their work.

"I thought, in a cup final, the level of control and quality of our football was very, very good.

"At times, we gave it away loosely and they were a threat, but we could counter that. I thought tactically, we were very good, pressed the game really hard and kept another clean sheet.

"There’s no greater feeling than today – because I’m one of them (supporters), and to stand here, listen to them singing You’ll Never Walk Alone,and see the performance for them makes me very, very proud."

"We came here with a lot of expectation and hope – the better team won.

"I thought there wasn’t a lot in the opening period, Celtic dominated possession and I thought we needed to be braver with our starting positions at times - any time we did that I thought it was evenly-matched.

"Rogic scores the goal, gives them a lift. The second goal was a touch fortunate, it looked like it came off Andy Considine.

"But we said at half-time the next goal’s very important. We don’t get it, Celtic get a third just as we were about to take Anthony O’Connor off.

"We were beaten by a better team – I don’t think there’s any disgrace getting beaten by that Celtic team, I think they’re a good side, and for us, it’s all about learning and hoping we get back here."

Scott Brown hoists the League Cup aloft to rapturous applause from the Celtic support.

The cup is passed down the line through his team-mates, with goal-scorers Tom Rogic, James Forrest and Moussa Dembele all getting a turn.

The first trophy of the Brendan Rodgers era, and the man himself gets a special cheer from the Celtic fans when he lifts the cup.

A sight those fans will hope to see many more times during his tenure.

"I thought the boys from start to finish were top-class, from the first whistle I thought we were great.

"The manager has been tremendous with all the boys from day one in pre-season, and to get this trophy in the bag early doors rounds off a great start, and we just want to keep going.

"The faith he’s put in us all, we’ve given him it back today, so we’re delighted."

The Aberdeen players go up to collect their runners-up medals looking as thoroughly hacked off as you might imagine.

A really tough day for the Dons and their fans after going into the final with hopes of a famous win and a second League Cup triumph in three years.

The day belongs to Celtic. They claim the 100th major trophy in the club's history, and they were the better team by some distance on the day.

The Scottish champions were in charge from minute one, and took the lead in fine style through Tom Rogic's wonderful goal on 16 minutes.

James Forrest's second was every bit as good, and from that moment on the result was never really in doubt.

Moussa Dembele sealed the deal with the third from the penalty spot after the break, and ultimately it was a comfortable day's work for Brendan Rodgers' side. The Celtic manager wins the first trophy since taking charge in the summer.

Aberdeen will reflect on this final with bitter regret and disappointment. They are better than they showed here and were simply swept aside without much of a fight.

Leigh Griffiths looks less than thrilled to be introduced for the final few seconds.

James Maddison curls an effort from the edge of the box but it is easily saved by Craig Gordon.

Gordon has not conceded a goal since 20 August against St Johnstone. Looks like he'll extend that run here.

Moussa Dembele has proved an inspired signing by Brendan Rodgers. He scored Celtic's third from the penalty spot here, and that means he has hit 17 goals so far this season.

Given we are not yet in December, that's a terrific return from the Frenchman.

I've lost count of the number of times Aberdeen have surrendered possession today.

They do so again and James Forrest bears down on the Dons defence, finds Stuart Armstrong 10 yards out but the midfielder drags his shot just wide.

Really should have been 4-0.

Aberdeen haven’t got anywhere near the standard they are capable of. Really disappointing.

This is a cup final, you’ve got to be able to handle the situation against Celtic, the whole pressure that comes on you when you play against the Old Firm in a cup final. They simply haven’t handled that. They've let themselves down.

It’s been as disappointing a performance as I can remember under Derek McInnes. I’m saddened for the fans and it’s a long way back up the road for them after this performance.

Wes Burns replaces Adam Rooney up front for Aberdeen, but in truth this final is petering out. Derek McInnes knows the game is up for his men.

The man who sent Celtic on their way with that terrific opening goal, Tom Rogic, leaves to a rousing reception from the Celtic fans. Aberdeen will be glad to see the back of him.

Callum McGregor comes on.

Stuart Armstrong wants to get in on the goalscoring act here, but his effort from the left-hand edge of the box flies over the bar.

Nir Bitton's first notable involvement since coming off the bench is to collect a yellow card for a cynical foul on James Maddison.

Fair to say Moussa Dembele rather enjoys the League Cup.....

The Celtic supporters believe their team are home and hosed here, and they pay homage to the heroes of their 1967 European Cup-winning side by providing a light-show with their mobile phones in the 67th minute.

The television camera pans to Billy McNeill, the former captain who led the side to that famous triumph in Lisbon almost 50 years ago. He's about to watch his club claim the 100th trophy in the history at Hampden.
