What a great opening day in the 2014 World Snooker Championship final. Ronnie O'Sullivan made a storming start by winning the opening three frames, before Selby reduced to deficit to one frame when he trailed 4-3.

However, defending champion O'Sullivan took the next four frames as Selby looked finished at 8-3 down.

But the Jester produced a spirited fightback as he won four of the last six frames.

O'Sullivan will start the second day with a 10-7 lead, needing eight more frames to win his sixth world title.

"Usually Ronnie O'Sullivan has a session where he blows his opponent away. He has not done that yet, so he may do that tomorrow.

"O'Sullivan has been good, but not brilliant. I'm just waiting for him to catch fire in this final."

"What a trier. As Mark walked into his dressing room you could see he was proud of himself and rightly so. All you can do is see what happens. Mark Selby's top break was so low, so what happens if he finds some form tomorrow?

"I'm not sure Mark can turn it around, but who knows?"

Mark Selby produces his highest break of the day in the last frame of the evening. It comes at a great time as his break of 62 sees him end the end 10-7 behind.

    Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-7 Mark Selby (9-78, Selby 62 break)

Selby leads 57-9 and is on a break of 41.

  8. Postpublished at 23:05 British Summer Time 4 May 2014

O'Sullivan has a long-range tempter, which he has a pop at. But his attempt is unsuccessful and Selby now has a great chance to end a tough day on a high note.

  9. Postpublished at 23:03 British Summer Time 4 May 2014

Selby leads by a 16-9 margin. It is a very tense ending to the day's play. The reds are out in the open so when someone gets an opportunity you will expect them to finish the frame in one visit. Neither player wants to make a mistake at this time.

Dan Emsley:, external It's testament to Selby's ability to be 10-6 down having played so poorly even if Ronnie hasn't been at his absolute best.

Nige:, external Wow, critical frame now you'd think for Selby. 10-7 would be a tremendous result for him.

Darren Simpson:, external Ronnie's form over the last three years comes down to one thing: Dr Steve Peters. The man is a genius.

"That was a great performance from Mark Selby. Ronnie O'Sullivan missed a black when he was in and with the way he was playing in the two previous frames then it was not a shot you would expect him to miss.

"But if it finishes 10-7 today then that will be incredible for Selby considering how he has played. For Ronnie O'Sullivan to only be ahead 10-7 after the first day would be considered a failure for him after he has dominated the match."

"If Selby wins the last frame of the day he will consider it not a bad recovery. He was 4-3 behind at the end of the last session and failed to clinch that eighth frame, but this is another big final frame for him."

  16. 50 break - Selbypublished at 22:38 British Summer Time 4 May 2014

A great response from Selby after breaks of 131 and 87 in the previous two frames from Ronnie O'Sullivan. Selby shows his class with a break of 58 to reduce the gap back to four frames.

    Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-6 Mark Selby (9-84, Selby 58 break)

A rare miss from O'Sullivan, who fails to pot a black off the spot, gives Selby a chance. Selby has a chance to score some points after being stuck to his seat for a couple of frames.

Emmet:, external Ronnie O'Sullivan is to snooker what Pele was to football, Mozart to music, or Da Vinci to art.

Yeah, but could O'Sullivan score an overhead kick better than Pele's effort in Escape to Victory? That's the big question.
