Michael Woodford:, external I think slowing the game down and forcing Ronnie to play safety after safety is a winning formula. Don't let him get comfy. Bore the pants off Ronnie playing a safety-based game we all know he can't stand and then strike.

Hopeless Wanderer:, external Got my cuppa and some cakes, time to watch a fascinating evening of World Championship Snooker and magic from Ronnie.

Did you know the only final in history not to see a century break was the 1985 final between Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor? The highest break was Taylor's 98 in the 13th frame.

The 1983 first-round match between Jim Meadowcroft and David Taylor in 1983 didn't feature a single half-century break.

So, a recap of what we have just seen. Ronnie O'Sullivan, aiming for his sixth world title, made a sensational start as he raced into a 3-0 lead after only 40 minutes play.

But Mark Selby, trying to become world champion for the first time in his career, fought back and took three of the next four frames as he moved to within one at 4-3.

In a thrilling final frame of the session, Selby had a chance to go in level at 4-4 but missed a vital black off the spot. That enabled O'Sullivan to clinch the eighth frame, to hold a 5-3 advantage after the first session.

"I think Mark will be kicking himself. He has missed a sitter with that black in the last frame.

"If he had been offered a 5-3 score after losing the first three frames he would've taken it, but with the way that last frame went, he will be really disappointed to still be losing."

"How crucial will that missed black be (see 17:11 entry)? At 4-4 Mark would've been so happy. His highest break has only been in the 30s."

Selby flukes the last red on the table, but then misses a black off the spot and that could be his chance gone of ending the session level.

  16. Postpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 4 May 2014

Selby makes his highest break of the match so far, an effort of 38, and then leaves O'Sullivan stuck snookered. It gains four more points for Selby after O'Sullivan misses with a two-cushion escape.

The scoreboard shows it as 53-39 in his favour, with only last red proving a problem.

O'Sullivan misses a routine-looking red into the top corner pocket and that gives Selby a chance of going into the break level. There is still a lot of work to be done in this frame though.

  18. Postpublished at 17:03 British Summer Time 4 May 2014

Will O'Sullivan be able to return to a two-frame lead. He comes to the table 11 points behind early in the eighth frame. He then pots a red and a black, meaning at this very moment both players have scored a total of 5,674 points throughout the tournament so far.

That's one for the stat fans out there. Apologies to everyone else.

Richard Jude:, external Watching Ronnie O'Sullivan play snooker is a real joy, but at the moment he has no rhythm and this is frankly hard work.

Shallinie:, external The issue I have with Selby is that I have never seen him play consistently well all the way through a match. Yet somehow wins!

Ross Gibson:, external After the first few frames I was worried this would be a landslide but it is proving to be quite a match.
